General Asif Janjua was named the new army chief of staff to succeeed
General Mirza Islam Beg who will retire in August. Another contender,
Genearl Shamim Khan was appointed to the "figurehead" position of chairman
of the joint chiefs of staff committee.

The US Congress voted against the dropping of the Pressler amendment. This 
means that Pakistan can get military and economic aid only after the President
certifies in writing that the country does not possess a nuclear device.
President Bush had earlier asked Congress to drop this amendment since it
applies only to one country. There was also intensive lobbying as a high-
level Pakistani delegation headed by the Senate chairman Wasim Sajjad visited
the US at this time. But the Congress still voted 252-151 to retain the
amendment. Meanwhile, a similar proposal regarding India was adopted by the
Congress but was likely to be vetoed by the President.(See separate story in

  The owner of Pakistan Synthetics, Yacoob Kareen, was kidnapped along with 
his son near Karachi.
