[comp.sys.3b1] smart/stupid idea

dt@yenta.alb.nm.us (David B. Thomas) (02/01/91)

Problem: the "iv" command reserves an extra sector from every track
(1/17 of the whole disk!!) for use as bad block alternates. That's
a big hunk of space you don't get to use.

Would this work?: on a disk with valid cylinders 0-800 (say),
map 16 sectors of all tracks on cylinder 801 (nonexistent)
to some of these unused spare sectors, pretending that the disk
is actually bigger than it is, but, alas, the entire last
cylinders are bad.

I haven't had the time to try it yet. Will it fly? That's
a beeg bunch of extra space if it works!
