[comp.sys.3b1] 3b1 kernel parity crashes <SOLVED>

rmfowler@texrex.uucp (Rex Fowler) (02/16/91)

Well, once again I am going to jinx myself by posting to the world that
I have SOLVED my 3b1 crash problems! Only this time, I'm almost positive
that it's fixed.

texrex has been up for 96 hours! Its previous record was around 30 hours
but averaged somewhere around 4-5 hours uptime. As many of you know, I
tried every possible suggestion that was mentioned by many of you. I never
replaced the power supply which was just about my last hope.

Anyway, for the past 4 days when I came home from work I was totally
amazed to see that it is actually still running. Normally I would
be welcomed by the all too familiar screen of kernel panic messages
and register dumps and all sorts of other guru meditations, as
little david put it. For the life of me I couldn't figure out if
I had changed anything or was I just extremely lucky and the crash
was about to come.

Tonight, I was thinking extra hard of what i had changed and I looked over
at my mouse and remembered that it was no longer connected; but WHEN did
I disconnect it? It seemed like it had been quite awhile ago but I
wasn't sure. A few hours later I remembered that after I had disconnected
my mouse, i tried out a game of tetrix to see if it worked without the
mouse. You know what this means? Yes, the high score file would be
timestamped with the date of my mouse-ectomy!!

First, I did a 'who -b' and got:

   . system boot Feb 11 23:13

Then I did an 'ls -l /usr/games/lib', crossed my fingers and got:

-rw-r--r-- 1 rmfowlerusers 880 Feb 11 23:29 tetris.best

Look pretty convincing to you? Needless to say, this called
for another beer!

Well, sorry I rambled on so long but I found this to be extremely
interesting. I would have never guessed my rat was at fault.

Anyone else ever have any mouse problems? For those of you who
are seeing similar garbage when your system crashes, you might want
to unplug that little critter before your next reboot and see what
happens. I originally unplugged mine because I was tired of the cord
getting in my way all the time. One of these days I'll plug it back
in to see if behaves the same. I'm sure it will.
