At the PC Unix Users Group meeting last week we had some discussion about throughput with trailblazers. I'd never had problems with it before so I thought I should actually measure it on my system. edward: is a 3b1, 2 megs memory (no combo card), version 3 tb+, 19200 baud (but I don't remember if it has HFC enabled & etc.), v3.51 (no updates). daveys: is my 3b1, 3.5 megs memory (combo card), version 4 tb+, 19200 baud, HFC enabled, connected to internal port, v3.51m. sydney: is the above mentioned 386 clone, 16 mhz, 8 megs memory, version 3 tb+ connected with a straight ribbon cable. I don't know if the serial hardware is able to do hardware flow control or not. NOTE: I will not be able to investigate this any closer since I just sold my system. NOTE: with interactive sessions driven from kermit on daveys I frequently loose large sections of a screen when, for instance, running `rn'. Obviously I have a flow-control problem. The xferstats below are from todays transmissions on my office mates development system (a no-name 386 clone with SysV r3.2.2). These numbers are the opposite of what Thad is screaming about. Namely that sydney->daveys is relatively fast (876 chars/second) and that daveys->sydney is relatively slow (334 chars/second) But note that edward->sydney is more reasonable but for smaller files which means that measurement errors can be large enough to cause a problem. | 19 - sydney.twg.com:david --> less ../.Admin/xferstats edward!edward S (4/1-7:23:22) (C,23423,1) [tty00] <- 102195 / 186.300 secs, 548 bytes/sec edward!edward S (4/1-7:26:16) (C,23423,2) [tty00] <- 114232 / 171.970 secs, 664 bytes/sec edward!edward S (4/1-7:28:42) (C,23423,3) [tty00] <- 97615 / 143.160 secs, 681 bytes/sec edward!edward S (4/1-7:31:53) (C,23423,4) [tty00] <- 111010 / 188.140 secs, 590 bytes/sec edward!edward S (4/1-7:34:54) (C,23423,5) [tty00] <- 112780 / 179.170 secs, 629 bytes/sec edward!edward S (4/1-7:38:03) (C,23423,6) [tty00] <- 101582 / 186.850 secs, 543 bytes/sec edward!edward S (4/1-7:40:41) (C,23423,7) [tty00] <- 99320 / 155.210 secs, 639 bytes/sec daveys!david S (4/1-7:47:34) (C,24050,1) [tty00] <- 91 / 1.720 secs, 52 bytes/sec daveys!david S (4/1-7:47:38) (C,24050,2) [tty00] <- 658 / 2.250 secs, 292 bytes/sec daveys!david S (4/1-8:15:56) (C,24050,3) [tty00] -> 1486841 / 1695.500 secs, 876 bytes/sec daveys!david S (4/1-9:30:10) (C,24050,4) [tty00] <- 1486841 / 4450.180 secs, 334 bytes/sec | 23 - sydney.twg.com:david --> less uucico/daveys uucp daveys (4/1-7:47:31,24050,0) OK (startup) uucp daveys (4/1-7:47:32,24050,0) REMOTE REQUESTED (daveys!/usr/spool/uucp/.Old/xferstats --> sydney!~/ (david)) uucp daveys (4/1-7:47:36,24050,1) REMOTE REQUESTED (daveys!/etc/inittab --> sydney!~/ (david)) uucp daveys (4/1-7:47:40,24050,2) REMOTE REQUESTED (sydney!~david/mmdf.dist.43.Z --> daveys!/usr/spool/uucppublic/a (david)) uucp daveys (4/1-8:15:59,24050,3) REMOTE REQUESTED (daveys!/usr/spool/uucppublic/mmdf.dist.43.Z --> sydney!~/b (david)) uucp daveys (4/1-9:30:13,24050,4) OK (conversation complete tty00 6165)
