Since BSD is basically a public domain implementation of UNIX, and the
src code is readily available from UUNET for downloading, etc... wouldn't
it be NICE if someone out there could develop a BSD kernel for the 3B1 so
that we could adapt the rest of the src to this machine? That way we will
be able to have FULL src code, and without the hassel of wondering.
Just a reflection, pardon me if it's too unrealistic.

Forrie basically sez: since BSD is so available it would be nice for a port. I've _thought_ about this, too, so I downloaded the BSD 4.3 (tahoe) dist- ribution to my U's unix host (tamuts). Here I created a listing of the contents of the tar file. This listing is some 66k+ bytes - there is a _lot_ of source code here. Of course, the 8 or so megabytes of decom- pressed source contains code for vaxes, also. Just seeing this source file listing is intimidating. And honestly, I'm puzzled by the sheer number of files - I don't now where to start. However, if anyone else has noticed, Dr. Dobb's Journal started a long series of articles back in January about porting BSD to the 386. I have the first article only, but I think if anyone wanted to do the UPC port, the DDJ's articles are a must. I do not believe _I'm_ the person for this - I don't have the time, but if I did and I had the knowledge, I'd work on this. Hmm, maybe during the summer I'll... +----------------------+--------------------------+ | Brent P. Isn't it great to be pessimistic? :-( Maybe we should have the BSD port issue put in the FAQ list. Forrie, I don't want this to come as a flame, but we just chewed through another round of the "Let's do BSD" story. If you want, I can send you some of the more relevant articles. j -- Jeffrey L. If you want to build a system that only boots up 80% of the way, then go for it. The people at CSRG are working towards a totally free system but they still have a ways to go. I'm sure that if you contacted CSRG they would be more than willing to accept your help in rewriting the remaining code. I believe they have a list of utility programs that need to be rewritten. -- David H.
