[comp.sys.3b1] help with downloads/finding an upgrade

sheila@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu (sheila miguez) (06/25/91)

I have a unix-pc 7300. I am having problems downloading programs.
I am using the telephone manager that came with the system. When
I try to download a program it prompts for the file name then it
flashes this line across the top of the screen too quickly to read.
From what I have been able to read, the line displayed is suposedly
using rz -1b and sending the file to my Filecabinet. After this
line is flashed, no window is opened up displaying the download
information, basically nothing happens.

If anyone could help please send me e-mail. If anyone would like
to help, but feels that I did not include enough relevent information
in this posting, please send e-mail with the apropriate questions.

I would also like to know if anyone could help me find an upgrade
from 3.0 to 3.5 or 3.51m

thanks

Ah, I doubt "rz"...do you *even have* "rz" on the machine???
Most likely, "umodem", similar to xmodem.

Seriously consider going to something else, possibly pcomm.
With pcomm you can put in any external protocol you with, including zmodem.
I run it on mine and like it much, *much* better than the phone manager
and umodem...I also run a Hayes 2400 (wishing for a Telebit) that makes
life much nicer than 1200 baud.

See the current batch...there was a post from U. of Washington(?)
they have 9+ sets of 3.5 and the manuals.

Pcomm is GREAT for that, BUT it doesn't offer the TERMINAL EMULATION
(ie vt100) that the async_main program does. If it did, that would
make it all the BETTER! I wrote Emmet about this and never got a
response, so I assume he isn't really that interested in implementing
it. Has anyone else out there more ideas for this or changed pcomm to
their liking successfully? (not that there's much to change!) I'd
really like to hear some comments on this. How difficult WOULD it be
to implement TERMINAL EMULATION like vt100?

Thanks in advance,

Forrie
