The GSA Women's Issues Committee (WIC) has worked hard over the past year to establish itself as a viable organization within the University community. In addition to the previous workshops and wine and cheese, the committee has carried out a recruitment campaign, presented the NFB film "The Burning Times", and introduced two new magazines to the Graduate house subscription list. Graduate students will now be able to read Kinesis, a newspaper from Vancouver which covers the national news on women's issues, and the resurrected MS magazine. WIC has also begun a boycott against Random House Inc. in response to the company's decision to profit from the misogynistic novel, American Psycho. The committee has written to Random house, New York and its affiliate Vintage Books in Mississauga. Letters were sent to all university women's groups across Canada, all local book stores, and all on-campus women's groups. An article outlining WIC's position will appear in the UW Gazette May 1st. WIC is asking individuals to carefully consider the issue, to join the boycott, and to write to Random House Inc. WIC is creating a UW women's directory. The committee believes that such a directory will be an invaluable resource to all university women. WIC strongly encourages all women's groups, both formal and informal, to fill out a listings form. No group is too large or too small, and all who submit a listing will receive a free copy of the directory. Over the summer, the committee will plan its agenda for the fall semester. All those interested in becoming involved are welcome to attend the Committee meetings which are now held every Thursday at 3pm upstairs in the Grad House. An hour a week is all it takes to make a difference. - Teena Carnegie Women's Issues Committee
