First, .38 Super has been made more popular by IPSC. However, I don't believe that *ANY* factory load makes major...you have to reload or purchase special loads from a reloader who does this for competitors (and they do exist). .38 Super is less popular than 9mm for at least one major current reason: magazine capacity. Its the short length of the 9x19 that has made reasonable size grips possible (at least traditionally) while allowing 14-17 rounds. But, the overall reason for .38 Super's lack of marketshare is that it had a reputation for lousy accuracy. That, and the U.S. Military's selection of .45 ACP for handguns and SMGs, left the .38 Super with a limited following. .38 Super was "re-discovered" by IPSC shooters because it could be pushed to major while allowing 2 extra rounds in a 1911. .............................................................................
