#I've always wondered why the .38 Super isn't that popular.........

I think it had a reputation for poor accuracy. Certainly Colt's
intransigence on the matter of headspace contributed to that poor
accuracy. From its inception until a couple of years ago, Colt
had the cartridge headspacing on its semi-rim. At least that
was the theory; I've never personally seen one chambered tight
enough that the semi-rim didn't slip passed its seat. After over
50 years of complaints, Colt finally changed the chamber so the
cartridge now seats on the mouth. Of course a company wouldn't
want to rush into something like that; it might be perceived as
being flighty. 8-)

#How did IPSC effect .38 super's popularity? Did it make it more or less
#popular?

More popular. The last two US Champs and the current World Champ shoot
.38 supers.

#How come .38 super isn't major? .38 super +P makes it, and I thought
#the super was a tough gun when it comes to higher pressures. Is there
#more than safety concerns behind that decision?

It is-if loaded right.

#PS, why is 9mm so much more popular than .38 super here? .38 super is hotter,
#flatter shooting, and only somewhat more expensive. With reloads it wouldn't
#matter much. It seems like .38 super is about $15/box here vs maybe a few
#bucks less for 9mm.

In a word "capacity". The shooters I know like the high capacity better
than the point advantage of shooting major. In a recent shoot, the open
class had 1,2,3 all shooting glock 9mm's. They were good shooters, but
that was not what won for them. In the stages where there was no limit
to the number of hits on a target they all thru an extra round or two at
targets they felt they might have missed. Consequently they all had more
A zone hits than us low capacity major shooters. If you have the capacity
or you are a REALLY good shot major/minor makes no difference.
