# #barrel length."
#
# Even some target pistols have relatively short barrels. The Walther GSP/OSP
# models have a 4" barrel, and the factory test group that comes with the
# gun is about the same size as my smallbore target rifle will produce.

The relation between accuracy and barrel length is not clear. Some short
(4") barrels may be much better than some much longer ones. The way they are
fixed is important. The best attachment is a non moving barrel, fixed only
at the rear. (compare, for example, the accuracy of a handgun with a fixed
barrel with one with a GP-style mount). The quality of the barrel is also
very important. For example, a Manhurin 4" barrel is much better than a 6"
Ruger one (S&W are pretty good too).

However, a longer barrel, makes a gun easier to use: it is more stable
and has a longer line of sight. A longer barrel makes a better use of the
enegry delivered by the cartridge: a quicker bullet will be more stable
(and then more accurate) than a slower one.

Any comments or other idea?

I have a Dan Wesson .357 with a 4" bbl and it is unquestionably the MOST
accurate out-of-the-box handgun I've ever seen. I believe the reason for this
(other than the high quality of manyfacture) is the the bbl is fixed at BOTH
ends, and is held under tension between the frame and the end of the bbl shroud. My theory is that reduces the amount of whipping back and forth the bbl does as
the bullet is on its way out the bbl.

                           Just my $.02 worth, Jay
