[rec.guns] Ruger #1 Accuracy

I tried to reply to Kirk but his mail bounced. It seems there is no
such machine as 'intelisc'. Apologies to the bandwidth gods.

# Whoa, there, son! If you glass bed the forearm on that Ruger #1, it will
# be *more* accurate than a bolt action rifle of equivalent expense.

Can you give me more details on glass bedding the Ruger #1? Is it
something I can do at home? Is the barrel floated or bedded along
it's length?

# Not to mention the aesthetic values.
# My favorite rifle.

I have a Ruger #1 in .375 H&H. Other than the weak extractor, it too is
my favorite (hunting) rifle. With good handloads it will shoot 1.5 MOA.
Not much fun to shoot paper with though. OUCH!!!

I've been waiting for Kirk Hays' response. I saw an article some
months back about glass-bedding the forend on two-piece stocks improving
accuracy, but the Ruger #1 was not mentioned. I wrote Sturm, Ruger & Co.
and asked if this was something that could improve accuracy on a #1 rifle.
Their response was to the effect that "We feel that our rifles should shoot
accurately the way they come, and if I am unhappy with the accuracy of any
Ruger firearm, I should send it back to them and they will fix it." They
specifically stated that they did not recommend glass-bedding the forend
  on Ruger #1 rifles.
Now, I have two Ruger #1's (7mm Magnum and .375H&H Magnum) - they are
just about my favorite rifles, and they both shoot very well, but one is
always looking for ways to tighten that group size a little more (how can
any gun be TOO accurate!). If anyone actually has any personal experience
with glass-bedding forends on Ruger #1's, I would be very interested in
hearing the details as to methodology and results. Otherwise, I'll just
happily keep shooting mine the way they are!
