[rec.guns] Hunter Pistol Silhouette

jim@doctor.chem.yale.edu (James F. Blake) (06/04/91)

All this gun control stuff is beginning to bug me. One sure cure
is to purchase some new firearms and accessories. I was wondering if
anyone has shot hunter pistol, and do you think a .357 Magnum would have
sufficient knock-down power, or would you go with a .41 or .44. I am
leaning toward the .357 (I have a Thompson/Center Contender). Also, I
have heard that Shotgun News is a good place to purchase T/C barrels...

I've just recently started silhouette shooting. While I am
currently only shooting small bore hunters pistol, I've seen the
other shooters shoot everything from .22 magnum to .44 magnum on the
100 meter course so I'd say that your .357 should be quite adequate.
Several of the shooters shoot .357 and I haven't seen any animals
fail to fall down yet. However, from what I've heard, the 200 meter
course is another story since the rams at 200 meters weigh 55
pounds.

For myself, I decided to start with a T/C in .22 to avoid having
to make a decision as to what caliber to shoot. Next year, after
I've had some experience with silhouette shooting and I've had a
chance to ask the other shooters for their opinions, I'll pop for a
centerfire barrel for my T/C.

I'm relatively new to silhouette shooting but from what I've seen,
the .357 magnum is more than adequate for the NRA 100 meter course.
Where I believe you would have problems would be on the 55 pound
rams on the IHMSA 200 meter course. So, I guess it depends on which
course your planning on shooting. I've seen shooters with just .22
magnums on the 100 meter course so .357 magnum should be more than
adequate.

For myself, I'm just starting out and I picked up a T/C in .22 LR
for Small Bore Hunters Pistol silhouette shooting. I figure once I
get settled into the sport and know more about it I will better be
able to decide which centerfire to get.

My apologies to the net for the multiple postings. I posted a
second article when I didn't see the first one "appear" right away
like they do in our local "test" area.

Sorry ... Mark
