[rec.guns] .45 gunsmiths in No. Cal?

allanh@sco.COM (that Heim guy) (06/11/91)

Does anyone know of any good gunsmiths in Northern California who
specialize in or do a good job of customizing M1911A1s? I'm thinking of
getting a .45 and I'll want to have some basic work done on it (trigger
job, extractor adjustment, etc.), but I'd rather not ship it to a distant
smith.

Let me disrecommend Mac Scott, at Scott/McDougall Gunsmithing in Santa
Rosa. They have a national reputation; as a result of some work they
did on my Colt GM, I'm not sure why. They did a duty trigger job on it,
and while it's crisp, clean, creep-free at 4.125 lbs, it will NOT tolerate
the slide being dropped on an empty chamber -- something I'm told by
other smiths can be done. The first time this happened, they were
quite willing to correct the problem free of charge. It hasn't happened
since, because I've babied the gun. If they had warned me of the
possible problem, I would not have had the trigger job done.

That Mac Scott backed a vigorously anti-gun NRA Life Member for
sheriff here, didn't help any.
