[rec.guns] Wilson-Dwyer Group-Gripper Kit

martin@mozart.amd.com (Martin Schuessler) (06/14/91)

Greetings fellow netters !

Last week, I posted a query about what the group gripper kit is, and I
actually found a description of it in one of my old American Rifleman
magazines. I called Wilson's which one I should order ( Gov't or Commander
for my IAI 45 Hardballer - it uses the Gov't kit ). I got it in the
mail a couple of days ago and installed in about 5 miutes.

Here's the weird thing: when I reassemble the pistol, the slide and every-
thing is in the same place as usual. Once I rack the slide once, though,
the slide doesn't move all the way forward anymore. It's only a small
amount, and the barrel is mated very nice and tight to the slide. So it
does accomplish what it promised. The slide is moved forward just enough
to where I can't engage the safety anymore. Everything does work OK though
( I haven't shot it yet, however ).

I traced the problem to the new spring guide that came with the kit. It's
the part that pushes up on the barrel that's just a bit longer than the
original spring guide (excuse the rudimentary drawing):

   ____________| ____________|-/
   ------------| ------------|/ <-- Notice the extension
    Original Wilson's

Question: Is this a serious problem ? I don't plan to use this as a self
defense gun or anything that would make it absolutely neccessary for the
safety to work.
