[comp.lang.vhdl] IEEE STD_LOGIC

wdb@vhdl (W. Billowitch) (05/09/91)

We are rapidly approaching the date when the IEEE will ballot on the
adoption of PAR1164.1 as an IEEE standard multi-value logic system
for developing VHDL Models. There are two clarifying issues on which
I would like to obtain a concensus prior to the final ballot form
of the standard.

1. The name of the package:
	Currently : "logic_system"
	Proposed : "Std_logic_1164"

The proposed name change is in keeping with other IEEE standards
such as STD_BSDL_1149 boundary scan packages. I also believe that
the package name is very descriptive of its contents under the
   proposed form.

2. The character used to represent the "don't care" state.
	Currently : 'D'
	Proposal1 : '*'
	Proposal2 : '-'

in v2.300 we used version Proposal2 but then some users wanted to
create subtype names out of the elements in the set, for example
UX01 or X01 or X01Z. Clearly WLH* and WLH- are illegal identifiers.
But in hind site, I would wonder why anyone would want to create such
a strange subtype. For those who must, they could always name it
with their own special name. I am in favor of Proposal1.

I am interested in your views. Please restrict your response to one of the
above choices unless you have an strong technical reason for an alternative
choice. Please post or Email your opinions on each
of these alternatives no later than May 17'th.
