[comp.sys.amiga.graphics] TAD vs. TADPro?

nschultz@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU (Ned W. Schultz) (03/03/91)

Could someone in the know please provide a description of what is in
ArtDeptPro that is not in ArtDept? I can't find a list of the additional
features, so I don't understand why it is that much more expensive.
I've seen ASDG's ads for it, but all I could gather from them was that
it had something to do with Ben Franklin :-)

Hqas ASDG ever posted a press release with details? If someone has a copy
I'd appreciate seeing it. Thanks...

Basically, TAD is a tool for converting images from pretty much
arbitrary formats to IFF ILBM files, along with a few built-in oddball
operators. ADPro is a tool for converting images from pretty much any
format to any other format, with display in ILBM for checking things,
and the ability to add "operators" as tools. Where TAD has dynamic
"loaders" for loading various formats; ADPro has dynamic loaders,
savers and operators. ADPro comes with a selection of loaders that you
have to pay more for if you have TAD. ADPro also has an ARexx port.

ASDG's attitude is that ADPro is for "professionals", whereas as TAD
is for "amateurs." I'm not sure how you define th difference.

I'm not a professional graphics person of any kind. However, I was
going to buy a couple of additional loaders, which brought the price
to within about $20 of the upgrade price for ADPro, which came with
the loaders I wanted. I counted the $20 as the cost of an ARexx port,
and did the upgrade. I'm happy about it.

Yeah - on BIX, though...

There has been a request for a detailed comparison between ADPro and TAD.
I have sent press releases from January which contain exactly this info
to comp.sys.amiga.announce. Please look for it there.

To summarize the differences:

TAD is an entry level 24 bit-plane image processing which gets you into
high performance basic applied image processing for very little money.

ADPro is an extensible professionally oriented image processing system
which is intended to centralize all image processing, image input and
image output needs in one program which can be completely driven by
very simple ARexx programs.

TAD is not being discontinued in favor of ADPro. In fact, plans are
underway for new work on TAD in the coming months.

Several new modules have recently been added to ADPro. The new version
(1.0.3) will be sent free of charge to registered owners. The new
features include direct control over the Progressive FrameGrabber,
Impulse FireCracker, ability to read HAM-E and MACPAINT files, and
several new image processing functions.

Please stop by Booth 800 at New York's Amiga-World Expo to see three
new hardware peripherals now controllable by ADPro. (A film recorder,
a dye sublimation printer, and the second generation of ASDG scanner
support).
