[comp.sys.amiga.graphics] Colorburst and type of monitor

bryanh@amix.commodore.com (Bryan Harpel) (03/05/91)

I have just one small question. Since colorburst uses RGB, will it
work on a multisync monitor?? (NEC 3D especially).

                                                           ///  Only
   - Bryan /// AMIGA
                                                      \\\/// Makes it
                                                       \XX/ Possible....

My question EXACTLY! Let me know if you get a "private" answer.

Thanks,

Well only if that monitor supports 15KHz interlaced RGB. I think the only
multisync monitor that does is the Mitsubishi Diamondscan, but there
might be others. I am fairly certain that the NEC 3D does not.

Well, I'm not so sure if that's true...
I have a DiamondScan and I also know this is one of the rare multi-sync
which can handle 'Video In'. I have it hooked up to my VCR and I can
watch TV on it, just like the 1084s. BUT My Amiga uses a different port,
it's not the same as the port above, and this is the Analog RGB.
My guess is that Colourburst uses the normal RGB at 15KHz, which means
it _should_ work with any monitor which supports 15KHz RGB, which includes
1084s, DiamondScan and NEC 3D. Devices like DCTV probably requires the port
which is only available to the monitors like 1084s and DiamondScan...

I have to throw in a plug here. Although it's a bit pricey, Sony makes a
monitor that does RGB and Video ins (2 of each) in 13" and 20" sizes.
The monitor is the GVM(13/20)00. I have a GVM-2000, and it's the best TV
monitor I've ever owned. It also makes a really good 20" Multisync. It's
not high bandwidth enough to display 1024x800 well, but it'l do 640x480
quite nicely thank you.

The RGB modules are replaceable, and I haven't got the service manuals yet,
so I can't comment on where the bandwidth limitations are (other
than stripe width). You CAN display productivity modes on it, but you will
get some pel aliasing. What do you want. It was only $1600, and for a
20" monitor that's pretty good. The best part is that, if you're into
games or video, the composite ins are first rate as well. My old landlord,
who works in a TV station as a tech, says it's every bit as good a monitor
as the $3000 Ikegamis they use in the studio. There's also control-S and
an RGB-InputA slect inputs if you're into multimedia things. Check it out.
(Joe-Bob says)

                                                        - MM

P.S. It's industrial gear, and list price is about $2300, but if you pay
list for industrial or pro gear, you're crazier than I am.

Hi. Well, as a former NEC 3D owner, I can tell you that the scan rates are
from 15.75 (15.5?) KHz to 36 KHz (I think). It should work.

It will work with any monitor which supports 15KHz RGB AND INTERLACE.
                                                           ^^^^^^^^^^
There are many multisyncs out there that do 15KHz RGB but few support
interlace. As Dwight Hubbard pointed out, the NEC-3D in fact does
(thanks for clarifying that Dwight).
