A foreign friend asks whether NewTek's Video Toaster is PAL compatible. I tentatively answered in the affirmative on the basis that there are so many PAL Amigas (Australia?) and because I am under the impression that PAL is a rather incremental improvement over NTSC but not all that much different. However, I did promise to try for confirmation. Opinions and expert advice is welcome! ;-) -- Travis Bissett -- -- Travis Bissett NSTAR conferencing site 219-289-0287 internet: tbissett@nstar.rn.com 1300 newsgroups - 8 inbound lines uucp: ..!uunet!nstar.rn.com!tbissett 99 file areas - 4300 megabytes --- backbone news & mail feeds available - contact larry@nstar.rn.com ---

As Travis has mentioned, us PAL users are indeed looking forward to a PAL video toaster. I have heard about the response it cause in the US and other NTSC countries and I am sure when NewTek release a PAL version it will have as much, if not more, success. I say this because after looking briefly at 1990's C= figures, somewhere around 50% of C= sales were in Europe, which is predominantly PAL. Thus, a PAL NewTek toaster MUST be on the boards based on this assumption. Also, PAL has some advantages and some disadvantages. It's main advantage, of course, is the extra 56 lines of screen in low-res and 112 in hi-res. This is a BIG bonus. I sometimes ponder having 200 lines filling up the whole screen and I wish C= would have released WB to test if the computer is PAL or NTSC. But due to our vertical scan rate, of 50Hz, our flicker is a lot worse than yours. You guys have 60Hz and flicker is much less noticeable, so I am told. I'd be interested to hear about this. --------krooglik@ecr.mu.OZ---- + Alex Krooglik |________________ + Faculty of Chemical Engineering |__________ +_______University of Melbourne________________________| --------krooglik@ecr.mu.OZ---- + Alex Krooglik |________________ + Faculty of Chemical Engineering |__________ +_______University of Melbourne________________________|

I am very interested in Toaster/PAL and I don't worry about 60Hz and flicker. I attempted to make animation configuration for the Amiga and LYON LAMB ProVAS controller/encoder/sync generator: +---------------------+ +------------------------+ +--------+ remote 20pin*<------------>* remote 50pin | | VO5850 | | | +-------------+ +--------+ video out(2)*------------->* VTR in | MiniVAS | | | | +-------------+ | video in*<-------------* VTR out | | | | | | video | | video remote | | out(1) | +---->* in rs232 (25pin) | +----*----------------+ | +----------------*-------+ | | | | | | rs- V +-----------------+ | 232 +----*-----+ +----------+ LYON LAMB | | cable | video | | encoder | ENC7/PAL | | | monitor | +----------+ | V | | +------>* R | +---*----------+ +----------+ | +---->* G | |AMIGA COMPUTER| | | +-->* B comp | | | | | | | sync out *<------>*genlock input | | | | +-*---------------+ | | | | | | | amiga 23pin | V V V V +-----*--------+ +------------------+ |rgb | 4 BNC connectors *--------------------------+connector +------------------+ Note that ProVAS incorporating features MiniVAS animation controller and ENC7/PAL encoder/sync generator. ProVAS is compatible with all major animation software, can be used with Amiga platform, and with all video recording formats including S-VHS, U-Matic, Betacam, 1-inch, D-1,D-2, and HDTV VTRs,etc. The broadcast quality sync generator with genlock allows for the integration of Amiga graphics system into any video system. In combination with NewTek Video Toaster system is highly recomended, but (always but....) is expensive. I'd like to hear more about VideoToaster PAL and when will be available on the market? Any flames? -Nikola Djurovic

The word on the 'net seems to be that NewTek has no plans to do a PAL Video Toaster anytime soon. Sad news indeed for most of the Amiga world. But take cheer from this rumor. A person in our Users' Group passed on the word that a product to compete with the Video Toaster will be coming out of Europe Real Soon Now. If true, it would be no surprise to see this one have PAL compatiblity ;-) Good Luck! -- Travis -- -- Travis Bissett NSTAR conferencing site 219-289-0287 internet: tbissett@nstar.rn.com 1300 newsgroups - 8 inbound lines uucp: ..!uunet!nstar.rn.com!tbissett 99 file areas - 4300 megabytes --- backbone news & mail feeds available - contact larry@nstar.rn.com ---
