[comp.sys.amiga.graphics] lightwave & anim mapping

dave@pluto.dss.com (Dave Monachello) (04/19/91)

Hi again,
Thanks for the answers to my previous questions. I hope this isn't another
RTFM question but where in the lightwave manual is mapping anims onto objects
described. Also where is the part about particle systems? If it isn't
in the manual where can I get info on these features.

	thanks,
		dave

Speaking of RTFM, I have been reading the Toaster manual, and have not found
any mention of acceleration/deceleration for object motion. Does this function
exist? Any toaster/Lightwave experts out there? Thanks for any info...

Anim mapping was added by Allen at the last minute under the request of Todd
Rundgren. I don't recall if it made it into the documentation. As for particle
systems, I don't remember seeing any mention of them at all in the manual.
So here is some info on each:

Create a sequence of images called filename<xxx> where xxx is a 3 digit
numerical sequence like 000 to 056. Then go into the images section of Lightwave
and select load sequence. At the requestor, give it the filename (without the
xxx) and then lightwave will sequence through them for each frame in the
animation. Just specify that image when in surfaces and sequencing is automatic.
Note, I believe you can use any number of digits you like but that number must be
consistent throughout the sequence. I always use 3.

Particles are simply single point polygons. You can create them in the modeler
by selecting a single point and hitting <p> (keyboard short-cut for make
polygon). They can be used for all sorts of things including explosions,
waterfalls, rain, stars, etc. By setting motion blur in the camera section,
they will leave trails when zooming past the cameras view when moved rapidly
in an animation. Allen said he plans to further exploit their use in future
versions of the software, but they are still fully functional now.

Hi Scott... no. accel/decel doesn't exist. I have written NewTek
(Allen Hastings) about the need for better motion tools.... and
hopefully they are in the works. Allen always seems to be writing
3-D code... a real hard-workin' guy! So expect to see Lightwave
improve over time.... unless NewTek holds him back somehow.

As Mike mentioned, explicit accel/decel control does not exist. However,
creating accel/decel with the key frames is fairly trivial. It requires
a little math, but with the spline interpolation, not many key frames
are needed (you just have to watch for overshoot). It would be real nice
if Lightwave graphed out distance, velocity, acceleration, angle, etc.
over time and allowed interactive modification of that graph. I'll
mention this to Allen.

Bob, I'm not familiar with Pro-Motion, (although I tried an early demo version
of it) so perhaps you can tell me something about it. Does it somehow include
spline/acceleration/deceleration info that is translated as a path object to
Lightwave? This sounds like a similar technique to Sculpt-Animate 4D, where the
points of the object/spline are significant, as in 1 point per frame. Is this
how Lightwave interprets the info? Thanks for your help!

Hmm...I don't have the manual here and I haven't played with it but I
thought that there where some adjustments for acceleration and
decelleration in the Object menu. I remember some graphs there. If
you can't do it in lightwave, you can always create your paths with
Pro-motion which I believe supports the above. Lightwave will read
these in directly.
