Frank.Neumann@arbi.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de (Frank Neumann) (06/26/91)
Hi folks, I'm happy to announce a small service to you: I thought it would be a good idea to have a place where we can share input files for the DKB Tracer. So I asked our local SysOp if he could create a directory for such a purpose on our FtpServer - and he promptly agreed and made me maintainer of this service. If you would like to use this service or even start contributing input files, here's the way to go: a) If you have InterNet access: ftp.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de [IP address: 134.106.1.9] User: ftp Password: Your E-Mail address directory: /pub/dkbtrace and here, look around - I've put up directories for DKB2.12, the additional utilities and Rayscene. For an explanation, see the excerpt from the README below. b) If you do not have InterNet access: Hmmm....somewhat different....I suppose bitftp@pucc.princeton.bitnet isn't alive any more, right ? If someone knows of other FTP mail servers, please let us all know. Certainly there isn't much in there yet, but I already received some files from Panu Hassi and added two (VERY SMALL) test scenes myself. Also there is right now a new .dat file describing the letters 'TeX', made with LOTS :^) of effort - take a look at it ! Below is the README file from this directory. Read it, and if you think you have some .dat files others might like, please share them and upload them into the /pub/dkbtrace/incoming directory ! Thanks, and bye for now, Frank ------- cut here ----------------------------------------------------- Welcome ! This directory was created for the Tracomaniacs in the world, and its purposes are: a) to allow people from Europe to get the most recent version of as well DKBTrace as its utilities and other goodies without having to ftp to Canada where David Buck's 'site' is, thus lowering net traffic. b) to simplify the process of getting DKBTrace for people who do have InterNet access and don't want to use the MailServer at Trearn (which should be, I suppose, mostly be used by the Bitnetters). and (the main goal): c) to present a place where we can share our .dat files - I'm quite sure there do already exist many nice scenes which just need to be shown. So YOU are asked: If you have created a nice scene for DKB and would like to share it with others: Upload it to the incoming directory, and drop me a note who created it (ok, usually this should be YOU, but how knows..), what you like about it, and maybe ideas how to enhance the scene. Alternately you can send me an E-Mail note telling me that there is something new in the incoming directory or just send it all to me via E-Mail. I will be trying to always get the most recent version here, but I cannot promise to be up to date. There are still days when something has to be done for the studies, vacations, and so on. But I will do my best :-) Presently we have these directories: incoming - public writable. Please upload your DKB input files here. PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD ANY GIF'S OR OTHER PICTURES! This will waste too much disk space, and won't help others who maybe cannot convert your pictures into 'their' format. Besides, just viewing pictures is DULL. Be creative ! :-) dkb2.12 - The Raytracer itself, binaries, sources, .dat archive this directory contains almost the same files as those on David Buck's site, alfred.ccs.carleton.ca [134.117.1.1], directory /pub/dkbtrace/dkb2.12. The only changes made are: - all .zoo files have been replaced by their .lzh (lharc) counterparts. lharc does a much better compression and is also available for most platforms. If you need lharc, I can put up the source package here. Let me know. - The readme.addendum file has been slightly modified to reflect these changes. The file readme.addendum contains explanations of what can be found inside each of these archives. utils - DKB Utilities This directory contains almost the same files as those on David Buck's site (see above), directory /pub/dkbtrace/dkbutils. The only changes are: - all .zoo files have been replaced by their .lzh counterparts. - the readme.addendum file has been slightly modified to reflect these changes. The file readme.addendum contains explanations of what can be found inside each of these archives. Rayscene - this contains the Rayscene package written by Panu Hassi and Jari K{kh|nen. It's very helpful in creating a bunch of input files from a modified .dat file and a .arr file containing variable names and coordinates - well, I suppose it's best you take a look at it :-) scenes - this is the place where .dat files are placed for the public. Nothing yet, but I hope this will soon change - with YOUR help. To make a start, I put up a VERY simple scene that lets you experiment with the RIPPLES or WAVES texture. So - you see, I haven't done very much yet myself (time is ALWAYS lacking :|), but your first attempts MIGHT be interesting to others - don't be afraid to share them with us!
