[comp.sys.amiga.graphics] 'nother round of graphics questions on DCTV and Ham-E.

jet@karazm.math.uh.edu (J Eric Townsend) (06/28/91)

As you might remember, I'm interested in displaying animations from
my A3000 and recording them to tape.

I talked to the professors who want to do the anims, and they don't mind
being limited to NTSC resolution, since they were planning on doing
a 400x400 or so anim in the first place (5 min for a 400x400 frame
vs. an hour or three for a 1000x1000 frame).

So, I'm thinking about DCTV. Even tho the profs only use about 64
colors now, they think that in the future they might want to do some
*really* colorful anims. Plus DCTV is cheap, so we can get *something*
on tape now vs. waiting for the next grant-writing cycle to roll around.

So what are my questions? Here we go...

0. DCTV digitizes. How fast for a frame? Is it possible to do lo-res
(320x200x2 or 4 bits of grey scale) anims directly, or does one have
to "convert down" from 24bit?

1. Arexx support? In and out?

2. Memory requirements. The first anim they want to lay down is around
400*400*8 (well, 7 really) per frame, minute deltas frame to frame
(evolution of a dynamical system, if you're curious), for about 10
seconds (300 frames or so). The raw bits (no delta compression)
work out to about 4.8MB of data or so. I figure it should delta
*very* well. If 15fps is sufficient, we'll double the length of the
animation and still move the same amount of data.
How much would DCTV increase/decrease the memory requirement?

3. s-video/rgb support. I keep hearing mention of this, but does
either exist? I'd *much* rather do s-video (it's why I keep paying
so damn much for vtrs :-) than NTSC. RGB would be nice as I have
access to a really nice film recorder. (Yes, I know HAM-E does RGB.)

Now some Ham-E questions:
0. What else do I need besides the box itself? And RGB monitor? Does
it support Amiga monitors? (I have a 1950.)
1. Anybody had a chance to use *both* and have an opinion?
2. Arexx support? In and out?
3. Memory requirements for the above info.
4. s-video/composite NTSC support?

Wow. This got really long. Thanks for any sort of information you
care to give, even if it *is* to go buy a SG 4Dgazillion workstation. :-)

When I decide what to do, I'll post a detailed description. I plan
on purchasing a Sony Control L / Control S tape controller in the
near future as well, so if you have any suggestions, let me know.

Again, thanks.
