[comp.sys.amiga.audio] Digital Audio Sampler?

gt4662b@prism.gatech.EDU (BRANHAM,JOSEPH FRANKLIN) (01/30/91)

I don't know if this has been pondered on here, but I was looking at my
CD-player last night and noticed this little plugged called digital out.

The documentation says that this is a "standard" digital connection for
the noise the CD-player makes.

Now, since many of us get into digitizing from CD-players, how difficult
would it be to design an interface to this output which could be used
with a fixed sample rate from one of the currently compatible digitizers.

I know Audiomaster can sample at 44khz, which I believe is the rate that
the CD samples. Of course, you'd have to strip off the lower 8 bits of
the sample.

Here are some questions:

1) Are the amiga samples linear or logarithmic? I seem to remember that CD's
use a logarithmic sample type?

2) What is the format for stereo sound sampling as far as the interface
between the sampler and the parallel port?

3) Finally, does anyone have a good doc on the format of the data from these
digital ports? I'm also surious to know what voltage levels the beast sends
out (wouldn't it be great if it were TTL?)

Moo.
