[comp.sys.amiga.audio] Trackers.

markg@amix.commodore.com (Mark Gardner) (03/25/91)

I've seen NoiseTracker, MED, SoundTracker, and several other mutations,
and one thought always enters my mind: is it THAT difficult to create
such a program that uses Intuition as it was meant to be used? I thought
the idea of a GUI (especially the AmigaOS 2.0) was to make program
interfaces that looked similar to other programs, thereby flattening the
learning curve and speeding up productivity. Every time I fire up the
latest *tracker to come down the bitstream, I'm reminded of programs on
my old C64 - proprietary interfaces, lo-res screens, and all. As the old
adage goes, "it's easy if you know how".

I don't know if this is a flame or not - I'd like to think of it as
constructive criticism. I use MED right now, grudgingly. If the
author(s) of this program would implement the amazing features and
abilities it has (or rather, those I've heard it has) into something I
can get at easily, it would be a joy to use, and might move from a funky
musichacker's tool into a truly commercial-quality product.

Well you should remember that all these tracker programs are written by people
who probably where programmers on the 64 and liked that kind of interface.
And these are not commercial quality products because they are PD programs
done in someones spare time.

I finally got Klisje_paa_klisje, Very impressive! great piano samples and
whoever did it is a master of guitar lead effects! When i play it in
protracker i have to go back to vblank timimg because the cia timer messes up
when it gets to the part where it speeds up really fast and then stops. for
some reason the timer drops to 35 and it diesnt go back to the regular speed.

And for whoever was asking about an arexx player for med, theres someone here
on the net who wrote a player program for arexx that you can even use to play
modules in amigavision. i dont remember his name, but maby he will see you
post and send it to ya.

The reason trackers in general (especially MED) don't use the traditional
intuition interface is the fact that they contain 100s, even 1000s of
functions. Using pull-down menus for such functions would be tragic...there
wouldn't be enough room, and only 1/2 as much as a overscan screen (the lo-rez
is used to conserve chip RAM)...Windows would be useless...the only real thing
you could re-size would be the sequence window, and it's nice to always have
it as large as possible (as it is in MED)...MED's setup is the most logical so
far in my opinion...having tried to use others (noisetracker, future composer
etc) I have given up before actually writing anything...MED on the other hand,
I used before even noticing the doc file...the 10 catagorized menus couldn't
be done any other way and still retain their functions...(like
variables...imagine having a window pop up and ask you what tempo you'd like)

But, of course, this is just MY opinion...
