I have a few questions about Music-X. Does it support standard MIDI files, and do the built-in librarians handle D-50 and Korg M-1 patches? -- **************************************************************************** * Paul Miller | DISCLAIMER IS BETTER THAN DATCLAIMER * * VIDEOWORKS Computer Applications | ------------------------------------ * * Certified AMIGA Developer | My opinions are mine own, and not * * --------------------------------- | those of those who are not me (um?) * * INTERNET: pmiller@vttcf.cc.vt.edu | - Have a JOLT and a smile! - * * ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * * Origin: MILLIWAYS, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe! I don't think there's M-1 support supplied. HOWEVER, it comes with a "generic" librarian protocol that captures almost any data. ALSO HOWEVER, you can write your own protocol in about an hour if you understand MIDI system-exclusive format. ALSO ALSO HOWEVER :-), MicroIllusions has collected lots of protocols from people and plans to make them available to Music-X owners. (I don't know if this means "free" or $$.) [ ... ] The M-1 is tricky due to the funky way the sys-ex data is encoded. There is no explicit support for it in the Music-X generic librarian. It should be possible to get a patch protocol up and running, though I tried and failed a while back (I oughta try again, since I know more now...) Limitations are: 1) The names will look at least a little funny, since there is character in the middle that corresponds to the high-order bits of seven other characters. 2) Don't even *think* of trying the generic patch editor on the data, unless you are some amazing kind of masochist. Like I said, it should be possible, and the above limitations aren't too terrible. If I come up with one I'll post it. - Neil --==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==-- Neil Weinstock @ AT&T Bell Labs // What was sliced bread att!edsel!nsw or nsw@edsel.att.com \X/ the greatest thing since?

I have a question for Music-X users out there. Have you had problems with using it with expansion memory? My arts class is using an Amiga 2000 w/ about 5megs overall, with 1 meg of chip. It is also equipped with a genlock (Professional Image or something like that). When trying to boot Music-X with this setup, I get a guru #00000003.0020F858. Anyone know what this is. It is version 1.0 of Music-X. The manual says the more memory the better...? Music-X executes a fastmemfirst in its startup-sequence, which makes sense for a program of its nature. I did get it to boot by running nofastmem before it, but now it only leaves about 55K left for samples. Have upgrades (I know there have been some) fixed these problems, or am I just doing something obviously wrong? -Shayne White (92_whites.gar.union.edu)

I used Music-X 1.0 with 2.5 MB RAM (Amiga 1000) with no problems. Note that Music-X grabs almost all available FAST RAM when it runs. Maybe you have a bad RAM chip somewhere near the end of your memory. Just a thought. Thanks to all those who replied to my earlier posting. To rehash things, I couldn't get Music-X to boot w/ expansion ram. Someone suggested that the fast ram may be bad. I'm sorry I don't remember who it was, but you were infact correct. At least I'm pretty sure you are. I ran a program called systest and it reveiled bad fast ram somewhere... Bingo. Now I just have to get the damned thing fixed.... :-( Shayne White (92_whites@unvax.union.edu)

Well, I finally broke down and ordered Music-X; it's gonna be in my sweaty little hands tomorrow night. Not that I'll get to use it since I'm going to see Yes in Hartford, but anyway.... :) I've heard that librarians or maybe even editors exist for DX-7 and Korg M-1 patches. I'm not so worried about the DX 'cause I have a fairly reliable patch dump/store program somewhere along with a few billion patches, but with the M-1 I've never been able to reliably archive my patches to Amiga disk. Assuming it's free|shareware or PD, could someone mail me whatever it is I need to get my Korg and Amiga to speak intimately with each other about stuff like patches and combis using Music-X? I'd be really appreciative...... Any hints or warnings about using Music-X with the DX and M-1 would be welcome as well. Thanks..... Robert Jude Kudla <kudla@rpi.edu> No more bars! No more cages!
