[comp.sys.amiga.audio] SAMP IFF Format

trantow@csd4.csd.uwm.edu (Jerry J Trantow) (06/13/91)

I recently obtained a file containing the docs and a library for the
SAMP IFF format. This format is an extension of 8SVX. My problem is
that the file appears to be 2 years old and I'm not sure if SAMP has
been accepted as an IFF format.

Is SAMP an accepted format?
Do any programs use it?
Is there a player for SAMP that understands volume modulated samples?

SAMP was presented on BIX by Dissidents (the original authors) and
severely criticized by Leo Schwab (co-author of iffparse.library) and
David Joiner (author of Music-X). Dissidents didn't really do
anything about the comments at the time, but have recently expressed
some interest in revising it to answer the criticisms and make it more
generally acceptable.

>Is SAMP an accepted format?

I believe it is registered with CATS, but it is not currently widely
accepted. It is in the process of being revised, so you probably want
to hold off doing anything with it.

>Do any programs use it?

As far as I know, only MIDI Sample Wrench from Dissidents supports the
format (it was invented for that program).

>Is there a player for SAMP that understands volume modulated samples?

Dunno.
