[comp.sys.amiga.audio] General MIDI questions

Hi. I am wanting to get a MIDI interface for my A1000, and was wondering
about a few things. A few years back (1986) there was a public domain circuit
for an A1000 MIDI interface. It uses two IC's (I cant remember which ones, but
one was 14 pin and one was 8 pin), one diode, about eight resistors, and
the plugs and sockets needed. It would cost me about A$25 to build, compared
with A$100 minimum to buy something similar. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody
has build this circuit, and if so have they had any troubles with it?
Will DMCS be sufficient to take MIDI input and give MIDI output?
I have heard of AMAS. What does it do exactly, and would I need extra
hardware to use it if I bought it?
	Thanks
	Richard

Well, I'm not sure what circuit you've got, but I built one for my A1000 a
few years back and it worked fine. I've got very minimal soldering skills,
so it can't be too difficult! The biggest expense was the box I bought to
mount it in.

I've found DMCS a bit flaky with MIDI, but it was good for just entering
notes in scores from my DX7. It's very limited in the recording and
playback department.

I've got it now for my A2000 - couldn't be bothered making another - and
I wanted a sampler. AMAS has good sampling hardware - the best for the
price, I've heard, and includes a MIDI interface. It has to be connected
to both the serial and parallel ports, which is a bit of a nuisance, but
otherwise, I'm very happy with the hardware. I don't like the software at
all, and suggest you get Audiomaster for sampling.

Cheers,
Dale
