[comp.sys.amiga.applications] is workbench 1.3.3 released yet?

chem194@csc.canterbury.ac.nz (John Davis) (04/12/91)

What is the current _official_ status of workbench 1.3.3??
I keep hearing people mention it - is it officially released
and available via dealers as yet (as CBM New Zealand certainly
seem to have never heard of it)

Yes, 1.3.3 is being shipped with the latest Amiga systems, at least the
500 and 2000. I cannot speak for the 3000 since I don't know of anyone
who has bought one in the last month.

What is different about 1.3.3? Can I get it for my 1000?

Yeah, but does it fix the really annonying bug where you get
the 'Read /Write error' whilest copying _on_ to a floppy, and if
you click retry _or_ cancel, it just tries & tries & tries again.
If you take the floppy out, it say you _MUST_ put it back in.
Ie, you have to reboot if you want to use that drive again :-(

Oh well, taking it as read that 1.3.3 must be available officially,
is it available as an 'upgrade archive' as 1.3.2 was (you could
download it from several online systems, the archive held _only_
those files that'd changed for the new release).

Releasing 1.3.2 electronically was a very good idea, as it made it
easy for people to upgrade to the current release, without having
to chase around after dealers. Hopefully CBM will see fit to do the
same with 1.3.3.

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't, seeing as how many people (here
on UseNet at least) were bitching about the electronic distribution!
Many people said things like, "This distribution is no good, I don't have
access to BIX or other pay services. I can't believe #@%#$^ Commodore is
forcing me to use a pay service to upgrade!" and similar drivel.

I thought it was a great way to easily distribute the upgrade.

Hmm, I guess I never have this problem since I use the ARP COPY command.
It handles this situation very well -- even asking whether you want to remove
the partially copied file or not.

Why is BIX/CI$ more secure than a nice, protected directory on AB20?

It isn't?! That's what I thought. So, again, if commodore doesn't get
a cut, why force us to use a pay service?

And if they only use pay services again, we'll bitch again!!!

A _what_ ?? Even assuming that "secure" and "protected" have any
meaning with anon ftp, how does that help all those without ftp access?
You haven't solved the problem, only fixed it for yourself.

CBM "gets a cut" from BIX or CIS? You better let them know about this, I
don't think they are aware of it. Were you "forced" to use a pay service
to get 1.3.2? No, you just pay (GASP! there's that word _pay_ again)
your local dealer for a copy of it, like any previous OS upgrade.
Remember that CBM was trying to do its customers a favor with the
limited electronic distribution of 1.3.2, and that legal concerns are
the main reason for limiting electronic distribution.

>And if they only use pay services again, we'll bitch again!!!

Which is an incentive for them not to provide any means of electronic
distribution. What you're saying is that if you can't have it, nobody
else can either?

Anyway, why all the excitement? 1.3.3 is a truely trivial upgrade. Other
than SetPatch fixing the hires/lores screen combination lockup (and
there are at least 2 PD/shareware programs that do this) all of the
changes are to fix Enforcer hits, not functional changes. Unless you
have Enforcer running, you'll never know the difference.
