[comp.sys.amiga.applications] ShowDVI sometimes has division by zero error

angst@cs.uq.oz.au (Andrew Moran) (05/05/91)

I expect this is mentioned in the docs but my German is limited to "beer" and
"stein" so I found it difficult to make much sense of them.

Quite regularly, ShowDVI quits (most gracefully) without showing the dvi file.
The log file tells me that the problem was a division by zero error. This
happened once when I had two other windows up; when I closed one, ShowDVI
didn't get this error. However, it still gets this problem with some dvi files
every when there is only one other window.

FYI, I'm running KS 36.141, WB 36.68 on an A3000/25/40 with standard memory
size.

Cheers to the authors. ShowDVI is a very good looking program, I prefer it to
many other dvi previewers I have used (on Suns, both under Sunview and X). The
only additions I would make would be to expand the user interface a little and
to include more key-stroke accelerators.

I down loaded Pastex from ab20 but can't get showdvi to
work. The program says something about catching a guru.
The program dviprint claims it is unable to find fonts
(for the `story' example) cmbx10, cmsl10 and cmr10.
These fonts are under tex:fonts/*.tfm.

Is there something I've missed in the installation?
I'm using an A1000 with 2meg and amigados 1.3.

DVIprint (and ShowDVI) uses pk-fonts. The tfm-files are only a
font description for ini/virtex. The drivers uses the fonts in the
TeX:pk directory (or TeX:fontlib).

Within the PasTeX1.2a distribution there are only *some* previewer fonts
and no printer fonts. You will need to copy the pk fonts from
someone. Or you can install metafont on your Amiga and copy the
CallMF_0.82.lzh file from the ftp-server ftp.uni-passau.de /pub/amiga/tex.
There are ARexx scripts, which generate all missing fonts for you.

ShowDVI don't work? Please sent me the showdvi.log file.

Very similar to my own configuration. I followed the installation
procedure as documented and had no problem. On fonts: do you have
them in the resolution required by the printer? If you have added
new font directories, have you told it about them? (I'm still a novice
myself--not as much as I was two months ago, but still a novice. I
may have that wrong, but I think you have to tell it about new
directories.) Hmmm. Actually, it looks like you may be missing
something if you are trying to use it the way the authors have it
set up: under tex:fonts, you need subdirectories for each
resolution. And you need a huge pile of fonts by the time you
count all the resolutions for printer (draft and final) and previewer,
for use with various magsteps and point sizes... The fonts with the
distribution just get you started and longing for more.
