[comp.sys.amiga.applications] AmigaTeX: Preview: texcreatefont100 not working for small mag's

rmr@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu (Randy M. Roberts) (05/16/91)

I am posting this to the net instead of calling Radical Eye for
three reasons.

1) I've tried to call 32-AMIGA only to get his answering machine (which
is OK, I'll try again in an hour), but...

2) I'm impatient.

2') I'll try his BBS tonight.

3) If anyone in netland is having the same problem, they may like to
see the solution, if any.

I just got the latest version of AmigaTeX and am really impressed with
it. The only problem I am having is that I like to use the "full"
size for the preview program. The fonts for this size are not
available on the distribution diskettes, so I would like to use the
automatic font creation mechanism to create these fonts. I have set
the environment variable:

	setenv texcreatefont100 "execute queuefont ..."

This worked fine with the previous version of AmigaTex which would
queue the font for any size. Now with the AmigaTex3.1 previer it will
only automatically create the font if the size is 69 or larger.

I tried creating TeX:pk/40 and TeX:pk/33, thinking that it wouldn't
create the font unless there was a directory for it. I even created
an empty "pk.dict" file in these directories. Still no luck.

What do I need to do in order to genereate these smaller fonts?

ADVthanksANCE,
Randy

So here's the answer. See below.

Answer from Tom Rokicki:

This is a feature of Preview3.1 not a bug.
	(I am not being facetious.)
MetaFont has problems with small sized fonts.
(I've personally been able to work around these
problems with help from "The MetaFont Book",
using the `turningcheck' variable (If I remember
		correctly))
So the new version of Preview has been modified to not
try to create these difficult to MF fonts.

Mr. Rokicki first limited the auto-generation of fonts to
83 and above, now it is 69 and above.
He has informed me that this limit will soon become
	user-selectable!

Another example of the advantages of having a well supported software
product. Tom, if you are reading this, thank you for your excellent
support of an excellent software product.

BTW, I do not work for, or am in any way affiliated with Radical Eye
or Tom Rokicki, except as being a new and very well satisfied customer.

(I mean, Mr. Rokicki is even rumored to be an Aggie, and I'm a Longhorn! :-)

Hook'em Horns!

Regards,
Randy
