[comp.sys.amiga.applications] Superbase Professional 3

spice@drycas.club.cc.cmu.edu (05/29/91)

I bought a used copy of Superbase 3 from its previous owner and I am trying
to use on my Amiga 3000 but I am having trouble with it. It loads and runs
fine on my A3000 except that whenever Superbase puts up a warning box
telling me that I've reached the end of a file for example , the warning
box flashes on and off the screen so quickly that I can barely see it. Yet
the warning box isnt supposed to go away until I click on the OK button but
I dont get a chance to click on the OK button. It seems that Superbase 3
is somehow reading mouse button clicks that I dont make. This occurs under
both AmigaDos 2.0 and AmigaDos 1.3. I'm running AmigaDos 2.03 which is the
latest version of AmigaDos 2.0 and my A3000 25/40 has 5 megs of memory ,
2 meg Chip , 3 megs Fast Ram.

                      thanks
                        Scott Corley

Those warning dialogs (end of file etc) are timed and designed to go away on
their own if you do nothing. Thus the behaviour you describe is perfectly
normal. The timeout is around 1.5 - 2 seconds.

The only problems you should see running the old SBpro under Workbench 2 are
a spurious white line running through the VCR Panel (tm), and some font
funnies in the menus/dialogs/requesters if you select a large system font.

I always thought that this was a feature, at least on a 2000. The
gentle warning message (informative but not really indicating
a problem that you need to deal with) goes away without really
distracting you from whatever you were doing. I suppose they aren't
being clever enough about accelerated systems, where the box goes
away too quickly.

On my system, an A2000, the box also dissappears after a few seconds, I think
this is the default when walking though a database. It is not when you add
a record (very annoying). I think they do a busy loop before they remove
the box instead of a Delay(50) o.s. That's why you hardly get a chance to
click the Ok button, because an A3000 is a bit faster than the A2000/a500.

I don't honestly remember (It was 3 years ago, and I wasn't an SB programmer
at the time), however that dialog _is_ processor dependent in that version
of Superbase.

In the current release, the dialog no longer has the OK button on it
(someone complained :-)). You can also get rid of it if you don't like it
with some new DML syntax.
