[comp.sys.amiga.applications] Default Type 1 Postscript fonts?

x90farleigh1@gw.wmich.edu (06/05/91)

Does anyone know where to get the Adobe type 1 fonts that come standard on most
Postscript Laser printers (i.e. Times, Helvetica, Bookman ,New Century, etc.)

I want to create the Amiga screen fonts using Aylward's mkbmap utility.

I have tried using converted Mac screen fonts in Prowrite, but the Mac screen
fonts are actually composed of the intended font and the Symbol font. For
example, the New Century Schoolbook font also has some characters from Symbol
mixed in, and the postscript prologue in Prowrite cannot SetFont to more than
one font, so it can't print all of the characters in the screen font (I have
already modified the prologue to reflect Mac's different encoding).

Thanks for the Info!!!

The latest version of AmigaTeX supports PostScript (through Post). Anyway,
Tomas Rokicki (Mr. AmigaTeX) suggests purchasing the Adobe fonts by getting
Adobe Typs Manager for Windows (contains the BASIC fonts ... Times-Roman,
Helvetica, Courier (and the bold, italic, and bold italic versions of these)
and Symbol. Adobe Type Manager Plus Pack contains the remaining standard
PostScript Fonts. The PostScript fonts are (to the best of my knowledge)
NOT public domain and so must be purchased. The Type manager lists for
$99 (I think) but can be obtained for about $57 and the plus pack which lists
for $199 (I think) can be had for about $117. You'll also need some way
(messydisk.device) to read IBM disks. You can then just copy the font
files to your AMIGA and go.

I hope this helps.

You can buy them from Adobe directly. Adobe Type Manager comes with Times,
Helvetica, Courier and Symbol fonts. Of course, you'll have to use a Cross-
Dos like utility to transfer the fonts to the Amiga, and you'll have no use
of the Type Manager program. The other fonts are sold separately.
