[comp.sys.amiga.applications] GNU Emacs

sjk@aura.nbn.com (Scott J. Kramer) (06/20/91)

Is anyone running Mark Henning's GNU Emacs version 18.53, Amiga Port
0.98? Has a newer version been released? Anyone been in contact with
Mark <henning@stolaf.edu>? I've written him twice in the past 10
months, but never heard back. I hope he hasn't orphaned the Emacs
porting project.

I'm running a late version of same, (still crashes my 1000 a
lot!)

Mark is still working on it and doing a great job. Stay tuned,
he's so busy with the final details of release htat he has been dodging
requests for upgrades via email, etc.

A stock 1000? The startup time must be really painful. Do you know
what's causing the crashes? It's pretty stable on my A3000.

Sounds good. I read netnews with GNUS and just need to make a few
more changes to VM for reading mail. Not too shabby! The main
shortcoming is lack of process functions (e.g call-process), but I've
managed workarounds for most cases. An AREXX port would sure help
with that. Do you know if one's in the new version? Any other
changes you can tell us about?

Where can I look for an announcement of a new version? I just
stumbled upon previous copies in different places. Is there an
amiga-emacs mailing list? Anyone want to start one?

Its QUITE painful, I'm running it on a stock A500, although I
need only restart it when something crashes my machine since I leave it
on all the time. I tried truncating the etc/DOC file and it certainly
loads up faster, although you lose (of course) some of the nice online
documentation.

I hope not; GNUEmacs is (FSF) free, AREXX is not. Can't anything
be done to get a call-process working (yes, I KNOW that could be hellish)?

	I dunno. Yes. How?
