[comp.sys.amiga.advocacy] Amiga Demo on campus

kengo@rpi.edu (Kenneth M Goldenberg) (02/08/91)

Ever since "IBM Fun Day" I've been knocking around the idea of an Amiga
demo, here at R.P.I. The Rensselaer Amiga Users Group has decided that it
would be a good idea and it's starting to take shape. A local dealer has
offered to spend the day demonstrating a few Amigas (I heard three) and is
supposed to bring a Toaster. Members have already pledged about 10 Amigas,
ranging from 500's to a 3000.

What I'm wondering is twofold: If you were at best apathetic towards
Amigas, had never heard of them, or "refused to use any computer that does
not have 16 million colors" (Someone in my Computer Art class), what would
turn your head long enough to take a look? I'm not posting this to advocacy,
simply because I don't want to DEBATE whether or not we should show the Amiga,
nor if the Amiga is as impressive as anything else. I simply want to know
what you would be impressed by. I admit that this group is at LEAST biased,
but I'd like a little bit of feedback. Among our group we have a substantial
amount of software, and the dealer has offered to provide some. My initial
thoughts are to have the slower machines showing sound, and maybe a Psygnosis
game. What kind of things do you feel would impress (sort of) a student who
uses RS/6000's and Sun 4's in computer labs?

The second thing that I wanted to address is the possibility of a
Commodore representative's attending. At a "Computer Fair" last semester
NeXT, Sun, Apple, IBM, and Zenith had displays--some showing third party
equipment (without a great deal of knowledge about those products IMHO). I'm
not asking for equipment (though it would be nice), I just implore any
Commodore reps, out there in Netland to think about an appearance. It would
make any demo we put together much more formidable.

I'll take replies wherever you send 'em... No one else cares about bandwith.

The thing that realy impressed the couple of Mac II owners that I've showed
my Amiga was the smoothness of graphics and sound. I think it was the
Blood Money intro that I showed them. They just couldn't believe that I had
smooth animation, digitized sounds, AND the game was loading at the same time.
But, then again, it's hard to sell a machine on just games. There are so
many other things that the Amiga is good it, and games is just one of them.

Good luck getting the fair started. I wish I could get something like that
here on this campus.
