I find that if one takes the time to keep the rollers and ball clean (and 
doesn't play BLAZEMONGER to often [unless they have the neural interface])
that the mouse can last for quite some time.  I have been using mine almost
every day for over two and a half years without a problem.  However, if it
ever does fail, I will probably splurge and either get a opto-electronic or
maybe even an infrared cordless, whatever the brand.
