[comp.sys.amiga.marketplace] Official word on educational prices??

es1@cunixb.cc.columbia.edu (Ethan Solomita) (02/26/91)

(Note that I've crossposted this all over and followups are to
marketplace. I hate being net.cop but this same discussion is
being spread out over three newsgroups so no one ends up seeing
everything. )

I sent mail to holland@cbmvax.commodore.com (Fred
Holland, in educational marketing) because of all this confusion,
and well, he was confused too.
THERE HAVE BEEN NO CHANGES TO THE FEB 1 PRICE LIST THAT
WAS POSTED A FEW WEEKS AGO. The new list is in effect. This has
not changed. Paul Calkin has not sent the world into confusion,
just some misinformed salesperson at some dealership. Everything
that was said before, including but not limited to:

1) No CPU/monitor bundles (except for the 500). they are
purchased separately

2) Anyone can purchase peripherals, even without a CPU.

3) The new pricing

4) Paying of taxes

	Are all true.

Paul Calkin will never read this (I don't think at
least), and neither will any of the other educational folks. They
do not take time out to read usenet. You have to realize that
most people don't read netnews at work on their spare time. I'd
rather see them working, personally.
	Everything has been posted.

This may be the email reply you have received but if you call Commodore
direct they will state that the new pricing is in NOT effect and that
the old program is in effect. I personally called Commodore's main office
on Friday and spoke with the educational dept. I will try to get through
to Mr. Holland tomorrow and see if he will stick to what he has told you.

I have personally called 3 salespersons at dealerships in 2 different cities.
2 in Pittsburgh, Pa. and one in Hurricane WV. All three were unaware of any
changes but said they would call Commodore and get back to me. After they called each
one stated the SAME policy. If any salespersons are misinformed I truely believe
it is Commodore's fault. One of the salespersons I spoke to was the most informed
person I have yet dealt with regarding the Amiga.

I would not want to be Mr. Calkin and have to step in to someone else's shoes
and immediately change a program that many loyal Amigan's have been waiting
for, but I would suggest taking great steps to see that the dealers know what is going
on to avoid the confusion. This is not the case, at least not yet.

If Commodore were to come out with a shirt-pocket, 100 MIPS Amiga
with 20 megs of memory and 1 gig of disk, and sold it for $300,
the first thing the industry would ask is "Is it IBM compatible?".
