I've seen an ad for a Hayes type modem, 1200baud, made for the ibm costing $300. It's an exterior unit, not a card. Will it work with an Amiga? Dan p.s. sorry I'm so ignorant about this stuff. thanks

You should be able to buy a 2400 baud modem for about $50.00. Where'd ya see that ad? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^ "Friends don't let friends use MS-DOS" ^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Assuming that the modem in question has a standard RS-232 interface, the A-500, A-2000, or A-3000 will use it just fine. The A-1000 has the gender of the serial connector reversed. It will work with an appropriate gender changer for the serial port. The internal PC modems will not work in an Amiga except in conjunction with a bridgeboard. There are Amiga specific internal modems available for the A-2000s and A-3000s. Seriously, you should look at getting a 2400 baud modem instead of a 1200. 2400 baud is becoming the standard but is fast being superceeded by 9600 baud. The difference in time spent downloading a 1-meg file is amazing. A 9600 baud modem would be much better if you can afford one. There are a plethora of terminal programs available for the Amiga, many of the public domain / shareware versions being equal to or better than their commercial counterparts. Almost all support the Hayes command set. >Dan >p.s. sorry I'm so ignorant about this stuff. We all gotta start somewhere. You should be able to get a good 2400 baud modem for less than half that price. Most all external modems will work just as well on an Amiga as on a PC, and if you have an Amiga that's newer than the original 1000, it'll even use the same cable. Look around at the ads and find a 2400 baud modem. Expect to pay between $100 and $150 for a good one. I use a SupraModem 2400 Plus on my BBS, and it's selling for only a bit more than the $150 price... -Bill Seymour nesbbx!billsey@agora.uucp or nesbbx!billsey@agora.rain.com ***** American People/Link Amiga Zone Hardware Specialist NES*BILL ***** Bejed, Inc. I recently bought a 2400 baud modem with : -- MNP5 (an error correction protocol) -- V.42 (another error corretion protocol) -- V.42bis (a data compression protocol) If I call up another modem, and the other modem supports MNP5 or V.42 or V.42bis, the two modems will use those protocols (or a combination of them). This allows my calls to be more error-free (so that line noise or garbage characters are very rare) and faster due to data compression. This modem cost me $165 at Comp USA (formerly SoftWareHouse), in Lincolnwood, IL, (708)677-3644. They have stores in Texas, Georgia, California, Colorado, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. While their prices are fairly low, this price on this modem was no special super bargain. Another place near here that has similar prices is Elek-Tek at (708)677-7660 or (800)395-1000. Or, you could buy a 1200 baud US Robotics modem (about 5 years old) from me for $60. No MNP5, V.42, or V.42bis, but it has worked very well with my Amiga.

>I've seen an ad for a Hayes type modem, 1200baud, made >for the ibm costing $300. It's an exterior unit, not >a card. Will it work with an Amiga? Yes, it will work on the Amiga. But $300 for a 1200 baud modem is crazy. Add only $200 more & you can get a V.32 9600 baud modem. Or, you can spend $150-$200 & get a good 2400 baud modem with MNP & V.42. -- Via DLG Pro v0.97b ___ _ __ _ ( ) ' ) / // /) __/________ / / / __|/ // / / (_) /) )_ (_(_/ (_) \_//_ (_/ /> </
