[comp.sys.amiga.marketplace] ethernet board & software best price?

snork@iastate.edu (Schuler Rodney Arnold) (06/06/91)

I will soon be buying an ethernet board for my A3000.
I need to know the best prices and places to purchase the board, and the
NFS & TCP/IP software.
Other questions
Is there public domain TCP/IP and NFS software?
Has anybody run X windows on an A3000 under AmigaDOS, and how usable is it?

I would suggest you check out edu pricing at GfxBase and C= for this stuff.

I am running X11 on the C= ethernet card on an A2500/20 and it is quite
usable. Though I do wish I had a bigger viewable screen, this 1088 X
912 overscanned, scrolling screen is certainly usable. I would say that
X11 display rates on this 2500/20 in monochrome mode is a little faster
than a Sun 3/80 with color.

As far as commercial X11 stuff, I can run Mathematica, DevGuide, and
FrameMaker. Haven't tried any other commercial packages.

I know this sounds a little silly, but though I do have a Sun 470 with
a 19" monitor that I have almost exclusive access to, I find myself
doing most of my work on the Amiga. I LOVE that big screen, Display
Postscript, etc on the Sun, but I keep needing to do little odds and
ends that are much easier to do on the Amiga, so end up here most of
the time. I just use xterms, rlogin windows under AmigaDos, & NFS to
use those nice Sun resources.

One other thing that is really nice about X11 under AmigaDos is that
you still have all those AmigaDos screens that you can work with in
addition to the X11 screen. This sounds trivial, but I really miss
having that flexibility when locked into that big 19" X display :^).
