==== #include message =====================

I have just uploaded a demonstration version of an IBM emulator to
abcfd20.larc.nasa.gov. It is called IBeM.lzh and it can be found in
the directory /incoming/amiga.

This emulator is specifically written for the 68020/030 processors. It will
only run on machines which are equipped with one of these processors, eg a
2500/20, 2500/30 or 3000.

The IBM emulation includes complete 8088 emulation, CGA graphics support
(including both 40 and 80 column text), hard disk support, floppy disk
support.

There is at the moment no serial or parallel ports simulated.

The emulator requires that you have at least two megabytes of fast RAM in your
system (standard with 2620 or 2630 cards).

While it has not tested on an amiga 3000 or on WB 2.0, the program is
completely legal in all its OS calls, and should run without problems.
The emulator does not take over the entire computer and runs simply as a
task.

The demonstration version which has been uploaded is called IBeM.lzh and has
the following limitations:
   1) Maximum hard disk partition for the IBeM is 2MB.
   2) Only one floppy disk is allowed.
   3) The emulator stops running after 15 minutes (non-destructive).

Anyone wishing to get the version without these limitations can send US$30 to:

Mark Tomlinson

E-mail reports of any bugs found to:

       Whaow ! This one's gonna be a killer .. if it's good !

Can you tell us a little more (like how good the emulation is, and how
fast) ... I'm asking that because I don't have access to an Amiga for the
moment (had an Amiga, but no network connection, now I got all the
connections I want ... aber kein Amiga )-:)

The emulator DOES work, and it does a nice job too, but it is REALLY slow.
I tried to use Lotus, practically useless. It is multi-tasking, as well,
running on a seperate screen. And it does not support parallel or serial
ports, limiting its usefullnes.....

It sounds like a nice start though. Can anyone answer the following questions?

	1. Is it color? I mean, color text?
	2. Has anyone run benchmarks on it? How does it compare to
           Transformer?
        3. Does it read/write IBM format?

I must have missed something, are you guys talking about an A3000
compatible IBM MS-DOS emulator? If so where do I get one?

I have tried using it and I can't get it to work...The only 3.5" MSDOS disk
I had lying around was one formatted on a Toshiba portable IBM clone, and
this emulator goes to sleep when it tries to boot the disk - just get a
black screen with a flashing cursor. You are still able to exit the emulator
with the 3-fingered IBM salute (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and have the system return to
normal. It just won't boot with that DOS. (PS. It is version 3.20 Toshiba
MSDOS...does this emulator require 3.3 or later or something?)

The DOS boots just fine with Transformer, but not with this emulator.
The emulator does seem to know it is a system disk, as I tried inserting
IBM disks that were not system disks, and it gives the usual "not a system
disk" message.

Since I haven't gotten it to run yet, I can't give a full review. One thing
that should be improved in it are its error messages - the important ones
aren't there. If the slightest thing is missing in the DEVS: drawer or
something is not set up right the emulator just quits, sometimes with a
message stating that this is the demo version. Took me a while to get the
thing going, and then it didn't like the MSDOS disk I gave it.

Just thought I'd share my experiences with running IBeM on my A3000. It
certainly runs faster than Transformer, and it seems to multitask nicely. I've
run what few MS-DOS programs I have on it, and one problem in particular has
plagued me - the emulator just quits unexpectedly, and with alarming
frequency. Especially when running PC Tools version 4.something, where I can't
keep the thing running for more than a minute or so. It does, however, function
correctly until it quits. Has anyone else experienced this?
All in all, I find it an amazing program, and even more amazing that it's less
than 50k in size! I'm in the process of writing an Apple //e emulator (no,
really!), and I couldn't possibly shrink it down to anywhere near that size...
I mean, just look at the size of Transformer...
Anyway, I hope that development continues on this program - it could easily
turn into what a lot of us have been asking for for a long time.
