hakimian@tek4.wsu.edu (Karl Hakimian - staff) (04/11/91)

Hi,

I am looking for information on the current mac emulator(s) for the
amiga. Could
someone please email me price, compatibility, and which machines are supported.

Thanks.

AMAX I costs about $110, while AMAX II costs about $150. AMAX II+ is
rumored to be released in two months, and cost as much as $500. You may
need to buy an external floppy drive that is Mac compatible ($150). You
will also need Mac ROM chips ($10 - $100). Through mail-order, you will
find rom chips for about $100. If you look around at local Mac dealers
or repair shops, you can get roms for $10. Do not believe people who insist
that it is impossible to get Mac ROMS.

AMAX runs on any Amiga that has 1 meg or more. If an Amiga has 512k only,
it may have some trouble finding space for the Mac ROMS to store in ram (or
whatever it does).

As for compatibility, don't expect it to run too many copy protected games.
AMAX 1.0 does a bad job with digitized sounds, midi, no hard drives, etc.
AMAX 2.0 does this, plus it may also allow networking and stuff.

I think it is time for a new compatibility list to go around. I have a
Mac and three Amigas, so I will be glad to test some software. Here goes my
recent tests:

Amiga 1000: not enough memory to run AMAX (it has around 360k).

Amiga 500: 2.5 megs, hard drive will be installed in about one hour
(I am waiting for the UPS guy to deliver it today).
Successfully runs Pagemaker, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word,
Personal Prolog, Math Language, ZTerm, Stuffit Classic,
PlaySound, Risk, and a ping pong game.

Amiga 3000: AMAX II worked fine in 2.0 and 1.3 modes when it had 2 megs
of ram (1 meg chip, 1 meg fast). However, when 4 more megs
were added, 2 megs chip and 4 megs fast, it no longer seemed
to work. Hard drive partition worked, although I later
converted it back to an A3000 data partition since AMAX II
	      decided not to work.

Although some software does not run, there are memory options that can be
used on the Amiga and AMAX to configure it for different software, which
increases compatibility.

I have been running system software from 4.1 to 6.02 to 6.05. I do have
onbe program that crashed...it was an init file that said FEED ME, from the
movie about the man eating plant.
