[comp.sys.amiga.emulations] MSH

Hello amiga-netters,

I have a problem with using messydos, if anybody has had this problem
and/or knows how to solve it I'd like to get an e-mail responce from
you. (I'll post a summary for the net if enough information is sent.)

System setup:	A-1000 512KBytes MessyDOS V34.8/1.30 (according manual)
		Kick&Work V1.3

I have installed a messydos device called DFB: on drive DF1: using the
mountlist parameters given in the first to examples of the mountlist that
comes with messydos.

Whenever I format a disk using the messyformat program (Using all default
value's and the option for formatting the whole disk!) and I copy a lot
of files on that disk (copy df0: dfb: all), the disk is NOT A DOS-DISK
after I eject and re-insert it.

After the copy, the list dfb: command shows the contents of the disk as
expected but doesn't actually read the disk. (Chached the dir in the
5 assigned buffers?) If I eject and re-insert the disk messydos doesn't
recognize the disk and it is marked as Unreadable disk in the ouput of
info dfb:.
An other problem that occures sometimes is that I write a lot of files to a
new formatted messydos disk (same way) and that the directory-structure
is corrupted. (Files with sizes of several MBytes and names of files that
are actually the contents of a data-file on that disk..)

My question:	Is this a problem with messyformat or messydos-device?
		How do I solve it?
How robust is messydos? (Full disks, partially corrupted disks)

Thanks for your e-mail response,

Note this is cross-posted to three groups, (Sorry but I'm a bit desperate.)
and the follow-ups are guided to comp.sys.amiga.emulations.

System: A-1000 512KBytes DF0-DF2 Kick&Work V1.3

I have a problem with messydos. I use DF1: as a messydos drive using
the default Mountlist definitions (From the included Mountlist MSH:.)

The problem is that almost all disks (I formatted with messyfmt (Default
values.) ) get corrupted after copying some files on them... (Yes I did
re-insert the disk after formatting...)

copy df0: MSH: all (Messydisk has a read or write error RETRY/CANCEL)
copy df0: MSH: all (After a break a second try give MSH: device busy.)
copy s:startup-sequence MSH: (Insert volume unnamed in MSH: RETRY/CANCEL)
Although the disk *IS* in the drive. (Re-inserting doesn't help.)

These are the most often seen symptoms. Others are corrupt 'list msh:'
output, or 'info MSH:' (Not a device) and list MSH: (States msh is an empty
file...)

Anybody can help me? Please e-mail or forward posted replies to me because
I can't read comp.* groups for a while.

It all depends on what you want to do with it. If you're just looking for
a simple MeSsyDOS disk formatter, I'd recommend PCPatch on Fish #218. It's Ic
on driven and runs from PCUtils on Extras. It's a bit slow, though, but VERY e
asy to use. IF you're also going to do some DOS crossing, and bringing somethi
ng into amiga format, you need something faster than the standard floppy (which
tends to crash it on mine). If the stuff you're doing isn't too huge, the RAM
disk is perfect.
If you want to use an amiga drive as a MS drive, then you want MSH (last v
ersion I know of is on either Fish 328 or 368 (can't check, I'm on a PSU mac :-
( )). It is kind of a hassle to install (note the usual profusion of questions
about it!) But works well on my 500 (after I vanquished the foul Beastie!).
I'm not sure about PCPatch, but MSH tends to crash under 2.0. (or so I've
 gleaned from the net!)
