[comp.sys.amiga.datacomm] ALT SYS AMIGA UUCP LIVES

dillon@overload.Berkeley.CA.US (Matthew Dillon) (02/05/91)

Hello everyone, alt.sys.amiga.uucp is now propogating through netDom
and should begin to receive traffic soon. People on
comp.sys.amiga.datacomm who have access to ALT groups are welcome on
this group, if you get ALT groups and this one does not yet exist
(alt.sys.amiga.uucp[.patches] that is), wait a few days and ask your
sysadmin whether he receives them.	If not, a mail-gateway will be
brought up soon for those people unable to access ALT, and a later
posting will include instructions on getting on it.

I would like to take this time to describe to you the reason for the
existance of these ALT groups. I do not wish to create an argument
on the outset, please refrain from arguing over whether this group
should exist for at least a month -- see how it works out first and
then you can argue. I'm asking this as a favor!

AmigaUUCP has been around for years, propogating through various
KOTS (Keeper Of The Sources) until finally landing on my doorstep
about a year ago. I and others have since made a huge number of
improvements and additions to AmigaUUCP. Just recently, a CNEWS
port to the Amiga was completed (Frank J. Edwards KOTS of CNEWS,
    uunet.uu.net!pdn!palan!ckctpa!crash).

The number of Amigas on the USENET have increased dramatically due to
the availability of AmigaUUCP, which except for a few items (such as
lack of automatic bouncing) is almost on-par with UNIX-sendmail in
terms of usefullness.... Fortunately, not quite on par in terms of
sheer code size -- yet! I recently completed the addition of
multiple-recipient 'C rmail' lines to sendmail and with this was able
to start a relatively efficient mailing list. Unfortunately, after
announcing the existance of the mailing list to the (now defunct)
comp.sys.amiga, I got over 120 requests in a little less than 3 weeks.

Needless to say, the mailing list became quite a mess. After not
fairing well with bounces and the like and discussing the situation
I decided to create two ALT groups as an immediate solution. Some
people unable to receive ALT will still be able to contribute via
a news<->mail_list transfer point I am devising. If these two
groups work out we will eventually go through the formal procedure
to create a comp group. This was not done initially due to timing..
the creation of a comp group can take months.

    ---- alt.sys.amiga.uucp ----

This group exists for general discussion, comments, bug reports,
requests, etc... pertaining to AmigaUUCP. Additionally, bug reports
and enhancements of the following form will be collected by automated
software at my site. Anybody on the current mailing list who posts
to this group will automatically be removed from the mailing list.

There is currently a specific data format to be used when reporting
formal bugs or enhancement requests. To have these items be
automatically added to my TODO file, use the following form:

(The software to extract ##B and ##E reports will be provided on
alt.sys.amiga.uucp.patches for those developers who wish to track
    bug reports and requests themselves)

##B unique-id

brief, to the point description of the bug or enhancement request

##B unique-id

brief, to the point description ...

##

You may include several bug reports in one message but the last one
should be terminated with a ## (double-hash). Please note that two
hash's (##) are used, not one.

The unique-ID should be some sort of unique ID that does not contain
spaces or tabs. For example I might use '##B dillon.1' I will
    reference reports using this ID.

Use ##B for BUG REPORTS, ##E for ENHANCEMENT REQUESTS / SUGGESTIONS,
other identifiers may be defined later.

    ---- alt.sys.amiga.uucp.patches ----

This group is intended for the posting of small to medium sources or
binaries, such as updates to the current distribution. Full
distributions will NOT be posted to this group. Instead, whenever the
KOTS (Keeper Of The Source - i.e. Me) is ready to distribute another
full dist it will be put on uunet and made available for BITFTP,
described in a later posting (soon as I get it working). Additionally
they will be made available via comp.sources/binaries.amiga

This group is not a candidate for merging with sources/binaries amiga
due to the nature of the postings (a lot of loosly related files posted
by different people incorporated into the master dist by myself but
also available to anybody who wishes to implement such postings
    immediately).

Anybody may post sources and/or uuencoded binaries to this group
assuming those binaries relate to AmigaUUCP in some manner. I will
extract code postings to this group for incorporation into the
master distribution, as appropriate. However, any source files
modified from the master distribution must be from the LATEST
master distribution (current 1.08/1.09), defined to be any distribution
    within the last two months.

DO NOT USE THIS GROUP TO POST GENERAL COMMENTS. This group may be
used to comment on a specific posting rather than alt.sys.amiga.uucp,
    but it is generally discouraged.

HOWEVER, bug reports and enhancement requests pertaining to postings
to this group not yet incorporated into the master dist SHOULD be
placed in this group, since people will only be confused if such
messages are posted to alt.sys.amiga.uucp (since not all of them
    will subscribe to alt.sys.amiga.uucp.patches)

					Thank you all,
