[comp.sys.amiga.datacomm] UUCP for my Amiga, What do I need?

tjhayko@THUNDER.LAKEHEADU.CA (03/29/91)

I'm trying to get everything I need to set up UUCP on my Amiga
and I've got the UUCP 1.13 distribution by Matt Dillon from
uunet.uu.net. Do I need anything else? Somewhere in the docs,
Matt mentions Cnews. Do I need this? I want to get everything I
need before I move and lose my net access while I get this set
up.

The UUCP distribution files contain all you .need. to set up your amiga as
a UUCP site, but there are LOTS of external newsreaders that people have
written that you may find more attractive than Dillon's distributed version.
When you use the uucico and getty programs to obtain data, the are placed
in spool with cryptic file names, these are the data files retrieved through
uucp, and the files such as "Dnews", and "Dmail" simply take these files and
put fancy programs around them to read them. Good luck, and thanks for posting
this, I Didn't know that 1.13 was the latest version! :)

You have everything you need.

Cnews and AmigaUUCPPLUS// are "3rd party" extensions to UUCP to allow
a more complete "UNIX-like" news environment. You can get these, if
you wish, but most people don't need them.

Also, there are two news groups dedicated to AmigaUUCP:
alt.sys.amiga.uucp - discussions about UUCP on the Amiga
alt.sys.amiga.uucp.patches - code distributins relating to amiga UUCP

I suggest you post further questions to alt.sys.amiga.uucp

You should subscribe to alt.sys.amiga.uucp and alt.sys.amiga.uucp.patches.
Announcements of new releases of Amiga UUCP are made there whenever a new
one comes out.

In theory, you don't need Cnews. AmigaUUCP contains all you need.

In practice, some people have found Cnews to be necessary. I'm not sure
exactly what the circumstances are, but people who connect to multiple
sites seem to be the ones most frequently finding that AmigaUUCP isn't
adequate.

You could mail to Matt Dillon (dillon@overload.berkeley.ca.us), or post to
alt.sys.amiga.uucp.
