Is there a 9600 baud standard? I see all this stuff about V.32 and V.this and V.that. If I buy a 9600 baud modem....can I call any other modem? I've got a 2400 baud....and I used to think that was fast.....but now...I think I really need to get something faster. So what's the deal? Thanks, acyoung@sunrise.acs.syr.edu

The standard in the entire industry and the world for 9600 bps modems is V.32. V.32bis will probably supercede V.32 in the next year. V.32 gives you a 9600 baud carrier with compression giving you up to 4 times that speed in theory. V.32bis will give you a 14,400 baud carrier with the same 4 times increase (theoretically) with compression. Right now there are several V.32 modems being manufactured by the likes of Intel and Practical Peripherals selling for around $400.00. These will most likely come with upgrade policies to V.32bis. I picked up a Hayes Ultra V.32 and hope to upgrade to V.32bis soon. > Thanks, Your welcome. > acyoung@sunrise.acs.syr.edu -- Bob The Graphics BBS 908/469-0049 "It's better than a sharp stick in the eye!" ============================================================================ InterNet: bobl@graphics.rent.com | Raven Enterprises UUCP: ...rutgers!bobsbox!graphics!bobl | 25 Raven Avenue BitNet: bobl%graphics.rent.com@pucc | Piscataway, NJ 08854 Home #: 908/560-7353 | 908/271-8878

The current CCITT standards for this are v.42 and v.42bis. v.42 specifies error correcting protocol negotiation and v.42bis adds compression. Where Bob is confused is that (at least as far as I have seen) all new 9600bps v.32 modems include v.42bis. You can, for instance, run a modem at 2400bps and still use v.42bis to get the compression. >Right now there are several V.32 modems being manufactured by the >likes of Intel and Practical Peripherals selling for around $400.00. >These will most likely come with upgrade policies to V.32bis. I >picked up a Hayes Ultra V.32 and hope to upgrade to V.32bis soon. > BEWARE!!! v.32bis is sufficiently different from v.32 that upgrading a v.32 modem to v.32bis is by no means a given. From what I've been reading, not all of the modem manufacturers are being real clear about this. If you really want the lowdown, I suggest some time spent in comp.dcom.modems. If your site has been getting this in it's newsfeed, and the article has not yet been expired there, look for something entitled like "lexicon". It is kind of a monthly FAQ posting on modem alphabet soup and explains all of this stuff in pretty good detail. If you can't find it, let me know and I will mail it to you. I also wrote up my own standard answer to questions like this that is much more brief. I would be happy to send it along as well. -- Jim Seymour | Medar, Inc. ...!uunet!medar!jseymour | 38700 Grand River Ave. jseymour@medar.com | Farmington Hills, MI. 48331 CIS: 72730,1166 GEnie: jseymour | FAX: (313)477-8897

I was just stating that with different compression schemes, you could get higher throughput rates. > >Right now there are several V.32 modems being manufactured by the > >likes of Intel and Practical Peripherals selling for around $400.00. > >These will most likely come with upgrade policies to V.32bis. They *will* be offering an affordable upgrade solution to Ultra owners. > If you really want the lowdown, I suggest some time spent in > comp.dcom.modems. Here here! comp.dcom.modems is the place to get the goods on all this stuff. -- Bob The Graphics BBS 908/469-0049 "It's better than a sharp stick in the eye!" ============================================================================ InterNet: bobl@graphics.rent.com | Raven Enterprises UUCP: ...rutgers!bobsbox!graphics!bobl | 25 Raven Avenue BitNet: bobl%graphics.rent.com@pucc | Piscataway, NJ 08854 Home #: 908/560-7353 | 908/271-8878
