[comp.sys.amiga.datacomm] Ncomm bugs

cs275rs@vuse.vanderbilt.edu (Roy Sutton) (04/27/91)

I've noticed that a sure-fire way to crash the system is to execute
Ncomm without Ncomm: being defined. This works equally well under
2.0 and 1.3. The exact gurumedition number is 00000000B.xxxxxxx.
(line F emulator). This problem only exists when not launched from
the shell (ex. AmiDock, Workbench). When run from the shell, it
tells you it can't find the required files.

Roy

P.S. I LOVE the program - using it now!

P.P.S. I thought the dox said full vt100? Did I miss-read that part?
Just now VI is doing some really strange things - i.e. No screen update!

P.P.P.S. I also just got that strange bug where it will let a line get
halfway cut off at the bottom of the screen so that all successive
lines will be cut in half....Impossible to continue reading w/o a
clear screen (and even then, as soon as it hits bottom, forget it!)
.....What would be nice is to be able to turn off the information at
the bottom of the screen.

P.P.P.P.S. I didn't mean for it to be so long, but I guess it's a bad
day for NComm! Should have gone and mailed this thing!

RE: Mcomm 1.92 crashing when the NCOMM: is not ASSIGNED.
I do NOT have that problem it runs well without NCOMM: assigned.
I also did not set up a Disk named NCOMM so when i ran Ncomm it starts
ok.. then when i try say to exit or Dial it then asks for Volume Ncomm:
IS it possable you have not copyed the new fonts? or not installed Req.libary?
i have a Partition on my Hard Drive called Ncomm and all is Happy.
I own an Amiga B2000HD MB Rev 4.3 With Half Meg Chip and Half Meg Fast.
Ram, Also i am running a Penrill V32 Modem and all is Fine.
i have set Pri to 1. and this has Improved my Modeming Speed.

Hope this info has helped you...

I believe that the problem only occurs when you use a path to invoke
ncomm......I don't want to try it now (stuff in the ram: drive),
but every time I invoked it using a path (ex: Spudwacker:utilities/modem/
Ncomm/ncomm) it would crash...I remember that when I first un-archived
it to ram:, it ran fine w/o the assign....

That is the same thing for a program when asking NCOMM:
So, in fact, you HAVE NComm: assigned to a legal directory.
That's why it works with you.

I was running ncomm successfully with ANY assign or ANY partition name
of NComm:, I never got asked for a 'NComm:' disk, ever!

I believe that if you CD to the appropriate directory before starting the
program, that works as well. I don't see the bit deal. I assign about twenty
or thirty directories in my startup and it doesn't seem to hurt things.

But my GF used to start her Ncomm by CDing to that directory then starting the
program, and it seemed to work OK for her without an assign.
