[comp.sys.amiga.datacomm] Recieving NEWS from BBS's

as_m332@titan.kingston.ac.uk (The Warlock) (05/23/91)

Does anyone know if it is possible to recieve these Newsgroups
outside the academic community ? What I want to do is recieve
and contribute to them on my Amiga via a modem from home. Are
there any bulletin boards or user groups which support the
Newsgroups (particularly alt.* and comp.*) ?

		Many thanks for any help,

UUCP is available which will let your machine work as sort-of a point
(Using FidoNet terminology) from your local university. Also Dialog
Pro BB/OS has the distinction of being the only BBS for the Amiga with
UseNet abilities. It is VERY expensive, but everyone I know who owns
it enjoys it.

Steve Tibbett's BBX has long had 'Usenet' capabilities. (For what
their worth to a dialup person who has only an hour a day)
It also has Fidonet utilities care of Gregory Kritsch's modified
juliet.library that access Steve's message base library. Something
very similar could be written for RFC1036 format. (In fact, I think
Greg may be nearly finished)
I believe that several people have also added 'usenet' capabilities
via AREXX.

I stand corrected. As I understand it there are doors available for
C-Net Amiga that also allows UseNet access. Paragon even has a program
to allow read-only access to UseNet. Write access should be
forthcoming soon I am told.

Dialog is the only one I knew of that allowed for UseNet being part of
the original software. Still, there are a number of options open to
people anymore.

I've seen BBX mentioned here before, but I have yet to see it
available anywhere. Is it available for FTP, or would I have to make
a long distance modem call to get it?

Replies may be directed to emcphers@manu.cs.vt.edu.

Thanks,

Frank

BBX is a commercial software package still in beta test. So, you should
not have any luck finding it available for FTP anywhere. :-) I'm running BBX at
my location, and am running a UUCP node also. I don't have write access for any
of my callers, but they can all read the groups I get, and I can feed other
nodes down the line.

Our package, DLG Professional BB/OS has excellent UseNet capabilities. We
have full read/write news, full UUCP mail, and the ability to forward any
type of mail to other desitnations... Eg, UUCP->FidoNet, or FidoNet->UUCP...

It is also a commercial program that is available for sale in pre-release
form right now.
