[comp.sys.amiga.datacomm] KERMIT or XMODEM transfers over a TAC to Unix

norton@manta.NOSC.MIL (LT Scott A. Norton, USN) (05/29/91)

I am currently accessing a Unix system (manta.NOSC.MIL) over
a TAC on MILNET. I have been able to get Kermit to work (the
TAC eats "@", but that can be changed to a character that
Kermit doesn't use, like ^B). But because the TAC has a
few seconds of latency, the acknowledgments for each packet
slow things down, from 1200 baud to less than 300 throughput.

I have a fairly old Wecker VT100 (v2.4, I think -- I'm typing away
from my Amiga), that supports Kermit and XMODEM. The far end (manta)
has C-kermit and XMODEM. Neither of the kermits support extended
packets or windowed protocol, and I can't get XMODEM to work at all.
XMODEM seems to time out due to the TAC latency.

Can anyone give me some hints to improve my throughput? I
can see I'll probably need to upgrade my terminal emulator
on the Amiga end, and get a matching protocol on the Unix site.
FTP-able solutions are prefered. BTW, the Unix site is BSD, and
the Amiga is a 2000 with 20M HD, 2.5 meg, and a 2400 baud modem, (but
the TAC only has 1200 baud ports)

I would suggest that you get a copy of VLT and the xprkermit.library
from someone and then ftp a copy of one of the newer c-kermits from
columbia. You can then compile it on your host system and have 1000
byte packet support. That REALLY speeds things up on a packet switched
network like the milnet. Forget trying to use XMODEM from a TAC not because
of delay/latency but because it is an ascii box ditto for zmodem. I
do not have the complete address for columbia but if you look at
comp.protocols.kermit they should tell you. the xprkermit.libray has
the actual kermit protocol implementation in it and vlt will not work
without it. I use a similiar setup all the time when I call our vax
across our terminal servers.
Good luck

If you can find the source code to SZ/RZ, then you can run Zmodem to do your
binary transfers between your Amiga & Unix system.
All you'd have to do with the source code is to recompile it (unless you can
find already compiled binaries that will work on your version of Unix). SZ/RZ
might even be on the Unix system your calling. At your shell prompt, just
type SZ or RZ and see if it works.
