[comp.sys.amiga.datacomm] 9600 baud Modems, info Please...

x91scott@techno.nepean.uws.EDU.AU (Scott Golby) (06/04/91)

Hi Everyone, I'm looking to goto a New Modem at 9600 baud and am looking
for opinions (and prices) on any model and protocol out there.
I'm looking Seriously at the US Robotics Dual Standard, so I will
have v32 as well as HST.
Any suggestions or any comments? How good is PEP compared to HST?

Thanks to all, prices would be great too!

It's my understanding that the Telebit (PEP) modems are better than the US
Robotics (HST) modems if you're running uucp.

I have a dual standard and am pleased with both HST and v.32 modes. It's is
indeed convenient to be capable of rapid xfers w/BBSi in HST in addition
to 9600 baud connections to the v.32 oriented UNIX ports.

Be forewarned: USR's customer service is THE PITS!!!! I've had many long
waits for upgrade chips in the past and now they're telling me that only
SYSOPS can upgrade a Dual Standard to v.32bis (14.4k full duplex as opposed
to v.32 -> 9600 full duplex) (Anyone see the logic error here :-{ Who's
going to use a new sysop's v.32bis mode if he's the only one that's got it!
Boy am I steamed!!! Sure would be nice to use a _FAST_ full duplex
connection with a UNIX box running DNET.

Done whining... USR's are nice as long as you get the latest ROMS and don't
want anything else from them once you've bought it.

I've got an HST now and like it. US-Robotics makes good modems. The modem
that I'm looking at is the Supra 9600. I think they're selling for about $550
(All I know are the reseller prices, and the Supra is about $500 less than the
Dual Standard). You might want to check it out.

From the desk of Sean Reifschneider. Isn't Amiga UUCP great? Thanks Matt.
