[comp.sys.amiga.datacomm] Cheapest route to making a public access Usenet site?

limonce@pilot.njin.net (Tom Limoncelli +1 201 408 5389) (06/24/91)

[Sorry this is being crossposted to so many newsgroups, I think it
applies to them all. I have set a "Followup-To: line to
comp.sys.amiga.datacomm]

I'm looking to open a public access Usenet site. I am willing to give
up speed for low price. Considering
that the system will rarely have more than a user or 2 (at 2400bps
most likely) I don't need something that is super fast. Currently I
have an Amiga 2000 with plenty of open slots. I'd pick up an old 3B2
if I thought they'd be supported in the future.

Being a "Usenet snob", I'd rather not go with a BBS that supports
netnews unless it is a *very* well done system. There is a big
difference between running RN (or vnews or gnus) and running a BBS.

It would be great if I could just run Unix (*any* Unix), compile
C-News, and just open up shop. I am ready to drop my plans to
purchase a C-A '030 card because I'm beginning to doubt if Amiga Unix
will ever ship unbundled.

I could also purchase a 286 bridgeboard, but are there any
Unix/Xenix/QNX versions that will run on a bridgeboard?

I'm not going to make the purchase for another 30 days and in that
time there are all sorts of things that could change. I'd hate to buy
a cheap 386SX and SCO (remember, for this small system speed is
not important).

Any suggestions would be great! I'd love to hear about BBSx (Steve
Tibbet) or any future Matt Dillion programs.

Tom
P.S. The site will be in Plainfield, New Jersey, will have a very
good Usenet feed, and will be free to call.
