[comp.sys.amiga.datacomm] A2232 and 2.0

phil@eos.arc.nasa.gov (Phil Stone) (06/30/91)

Excuse me if this is a FAQ, but what support, if any, does 2.0
have for the A2232 multi-serial board?

I just purchased and installed this board in my 3000. All the
documentation refers to 2000's, and all the software appears to
be 1.3. Most notably, the "a2232-preferences" program is the *entire*
1.3 "preferences," with patches that allow port selection.

The docs that come with the a2232 direct me to replace the
serial device, the mount command, the port-handler and the aux-handler.
I notice that this software is dated first-quarter '90, which is much
earlier than my version of 2.0. So, do I trash newer software with
older upgrades made for this board?

There's not even a *mention* of 2.0 in the A2232 docs. What's up here?

If this *is* a FAQ, please email any info; otherwise, post, since it's
probably of general interest. Many thanks!

Actually this is a very GOOD question, and I'm glad someone finally got around
to asking it. I hope 2.0 supports multiple serial ports in an intelligent way,
because 1.3 sure doesn't. It assumes that there is only one serial port, so one
can't set different default parameters for different ports. This is a major
pain when one has, say, a modem that uses RTS/CTS handshaking and a printer that
uses XON/XOFF, and at a different baud rate. It would be criminal for C= not to
support preexisting hardware properly in an OS that's still uder development.

I guess the question is: what does the 2.0 Preferences structure look like?

I've been meaning to write a small hack that patches OpenDevice() to allow
separate defaults to be specified for all the serial ports via a config file,
but haven't gotten around to it yet. Feel free to beat me to it, everyone.

I have seen no FAQ on the 2232....Ah, you install the 33.11 serial.device and
the 34.12 oldser.device and it works under 2.0. As far as I know, there are no
special serial preferences for 2.0. Just set the default unit number with the
1.3 preferences and I believe(don't kill me if I am wrong on this) that it
will use the preference setting under 2.0.

Yes, put the v33 version of the serial.device on your harddrive. The 2232
serial.device has hit the enforcer a few times on me. Things like the Enforcer
are also ignorant to boards like the 2232's default unit setting and will
output to the built in serial no matter what you set in preferences(again,
from my limited tinkering I came to this conclusion, please correct me if I am
wrong).....In other words, your V36 serial.device doesn't know what a 2232
board is and how to talk to it.

The 2232 docs were written when 2.0 was known as 1.4, but anyways, it really
doesn't matter too much. I'm still waiting for a new serial.device for my
revision 6 board with the 8551's on it(that knows how to send a hardware
break on this revision board). I assume the 8551's have been recently added,
since the schematics show 6551's, and that the 8551's may need to be
programmed differently to send a break.
