C A L L F O R B E T A T E S T E R S -------------------------------------- At the moment, I have a number of people beta-testing what I intend to be a freely-distributable TCP/IP library for the Amiga. Because I'd really like to drive the code into the ground, I'm looking for another 8 to 10 folks to help test it. WHAT EXACTLY IS IT? It's a TCP/IP library. If you don't know what TCP/IP is, you're very likely not knowledgable enough about the topic to be able to help much, but TCP/IP is a simple name for the 'Internet Protocol Suite' - the set of protocols that run the Internet, and a heckuva lot of LANs. It's a growing collection of programs, mostly as I (and others) have time. At the moment, the collection contains support for TCP, IP, UDP, and ICMP; a domain name service resolver exists; seperate networking device drivers; a variety of the common Unixish support programs - telnet, ftp, finger, ping, netstat, ntalk, ntalkd, telnetd, fingerd, inetd (sort of), etc. WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT DO I NEED? It's likely to disappoint most people, but as it stands, the software is entirely serially-based. I own a mere '85 A1000, and can't afford anything that I could shove an ethernet card into. Besides that, I can't afford an ethernet card. (And, from the responses I've gotten from my queries into employment possibilities after I graduate in a few weeks, it doesn't look like I'll be able to afford ethernet support for years. Anybody want to hire a clever Computer Engineering graduate? :') ) To run the software, you need a SERIAL hookup to a network - usually SLIP. This is often accomplished by a serial connection to a Unix box. It can be either a dialup connection (through the modem), or a direct wired hookup. I'd prefer a few folks of the latter, because I haven't heard how the code runs at high speeds yet. WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? Almost nothing. I guess, if it's important, you get to play with some nifty software before most anyone else does. That's just about it. OKAY, I'M INTERESTED - WHAT DO I DO NEXT? Send me email. Try the following, in order from top to bottom. Please include your setup, what kind of net connection you'd have, and your background (if any) in relation to tcp/ip. gsm@terminator.cc.umich.edu gm@ionic.uucp gsmiller@mtu.edu gsmiller@mtus5.cts.mtu.edu GSMILLER@MTUS5.BITNET (906) 482-7295 Thanks! - Greg -- +----------------------------------------------------------------+ | I know what I did wrong ... | Greg Miller | | I know what I did wrong! | ..ames!sharkey!ionic!gm | | First the powder, THEN the | gm@ionic.uucp | | wadding! | | +----------------------------------------------------------------+
